90 years for man in killing of DePaul honors student
A Cook County judge today sentenced a 21-year-old man to 90 years in prison for the 2009 murder of DePaul University honors student Francisco "Frankie" Valencia at a West Side Halloween party.
Narcisco Gatica showed no reaction as Judge Matthew Coghlan announced his decision.
During a lengthy hearing, Valencia's mother, Joy McCormack, took half an hour to read an emotional statement to the court, talking about lying with him at night laughing and planning his future, about his dreams of changing the world.
"Our family is left feeling broken," McCormack said through tears. "On many days it seems like this darkness is stronger than I am."
A jury convicted Gatica last month of first-degree murder and aggravated battery for fatally shooting Valencia and wounding a woman at a party in a rented condominium in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.
A co-defendant, Berly Valladares, was previously sentenced to 70 years in prison for supplying the gun to Gatica.
Prosecutors said Gatica, an admitted Maniac Latin Disciple gang member, was angry after he and friends were kicked out of the party in the 1700 block of North Rockwell Street. Valencia was shot in the chest, while Daisy Camacho, 23, was wounded in the neck.
In a videotaped interview with Chicago police, Gatica first denied he was at the scene, then tried to blame Valladares and finally confessed that it was him captured on surveillance video firing a TEC-9 pistol four or five times

Former St. Xavier vice president admits embezzling $850,000
A former St. Xavier University vice president pleaded guilty today to stealing more than $850,000 from the school by submitting false claims for more than 10 years.
Susan Piros, 56, stole the money from a program that received federal funding from 1998 to the middle of 2009. She has been ordered to pay the federal government $854,493, according to the plea agreement.
As vice president for business and finance at St. Xavier, Piros was authorized to approve expenses under $10,000 on her own, according to the agreement.
Piros claimed she was being reimbursed for more than $800,000 in loans she made to St. Xavier. When questioned by university investigators, she provided spreadsheets she claimed documented the loans.
Over the same period, Piros was also reimbursed for nearly $1 million in expenses and purchases, but investigators have been unable to audit those expenses. Piros has admitted to fraudently obtaining only about $30,000 of those funds, according to the agreement.
Piros has agreed to pay restitution to St. Xavier as well, but the amount is to be determined later by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer.
The judge set sentencing for Jan. 13, 2012. Prosecutors are recommending Piros be sentenced to 37 to 46 months in prison. She now lives in Rincon, Ga.

Top gang leader gets 40 years for violence in Little Village
The reputed No. 2 leader for the Latin Kings was sentenced Friday to 40 years in federal prison for ordering violence in the street gang’s Little Village stronghold.
The sentence will run concurrently with a 20-year prison term already being served by Fernando King for a narcotics-related offense.
King's attorney said prosecutors had not presented enough evidence to hold King responsible for specific violence carried out by one of the nation’s largest and most feared gangs.
King asked U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle for leniency and contended he was trying to distance himself from the Latin Kings and establish his own business at the time of his arrest.
In court, King's elderly mother and youngest sister submitted written statements saying that King was kind and generous to his family. At several times during the hearing, King's mother became emotional and wiped tears from her eyes.
In sentencing King, Norgle said he had not accepted responsibility for the violence he helped cultivate in Little Village.

50-year sentence given for landlord's burning death
A man who pleaded guilty to pouring gasoline over his former landlord and setting him on fire, fatally injuring him at his Woodlawn building, was sentenced to 50 years in prison today.
Donald Hardy, 31, pleaded guilty Aug. 22 in the slaying of Harlan Hayes, 77, who was lit on fire Aug. 19, 2008, and died five days later without regaining consciousness.Cook County Criminal Court Judge Nicholas Ford sentenced Hardy to 50 years in prison today, said Cook County state’s attorney’s spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
In court today, Hardy said he was "shamelessly and humbly sorry."
Hardy and other members of his family had lived for several years in a building in the 6300 block of South Ellis Avenue that Hardy had owned for decades. Hayes' family members said in 2008 that Hayes evicted Hardy, his mother and other family members after getting a letter from the city alleging drug activity in their apartment.
Prosecutors said one of the family had been selling drugs, and state records show Hardy’s brother, Scottie, is serving a 10-year prison term on drug conspiracy charges brought a few months before the slaying. Court records show that Donald Hardy had been convicted of drug charges himself.
Early in the morning of the attack, Hardy and another man who has not been identified went to the apartment building Hayes owned and lived in, according to a victim-impact statement from Hayes' niece, Zakharyscha Hayes, read in court today.
Hardy knocked on Hayes’ door and Hayes let him in. After the two talked briefly, Hardy poured gasoline on Hayes, refusing to stop despite Hayes’ pleas for him to stop and lit Hayes on fire, according to police and prosecutors.Hayes then ran out of the building to keep the building from catching fire and to save others who lived there, Hayes' niece said in the statement. According to the niece, Hayes ran 300 feet to a neighbor's home, where he told them that Hardy had set him on fire.
A tenant at the time said she called 911 after she saw Hayes flee from the building, badly burned, and saw him collapse on the neighbor's
