Detectives warn Lakeview residents of robberies

North Side detectives are warning residents of Lakeview in the Town Hall Police District about two series of robberies that have taken place in the area dating back to May, with the latest of the robberies taking place early Monday.
In the older of the two robbery patterns, dating back to May 22, someone went up to people and threatened them with a hammer. In the more recent series of robberies, dating back to Sept. 11, people have been robbed and their purses snatched.
Nearly all of the robberies have taken place in the early morning hours.
The  latest of both the hammer and purse-snatching attacks took place early Monday, according to police. Men and women or men dressed as women have been asking to use a victim's cell phone, then snatching a purse or wallet or hitting and kicking a victim, then going through their pockets, according to one alert issued today. The robbers also have used pepper spray in some of the attacks.
The robbers appear to vary in age from their late teens up to about 30 years old. Police released a detailed description in only one of the robberies, which happened about 12:50 a.m. Monday in the 1200 block of West Cornelia Avenue. A robber in that incident is described as a black woman between the ages of 20 and 25, standing 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, and wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt with white lettering.
In another robbery in this pattern, a man between the ages of 25 and 29, dressed as a woman, got out of a dark, older-model vehicle, possibly a Nissan Sentra, that had three or four other men dressed as women in it, in the 600 block of West Belmont Avenue about 12:50 a.m. Monday and snatched a purse.
Other robberies in the first pattern were:
In the 900 block of West Belmont Avenue on Sept. 11 at 3:30 a.m. and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday;
In the 3500 block of North Sheffield Avenue on Saturday about 4:10 a.m.
In the pattern in which people have been attacking victims with a hammer, the latest robbery happened in the 3000 block of North Seminary Avenue about 12:30 a.m. Mondayalert.
In the robberies, between one and six people have gone up to people on the sidewalk and threatened victims with a hammer.
In Monday's robbery, one of the six robbers hit the victim in the leg with the hammer, sending the victim to the ground, and the group then fled in a sedan.
The other two robberies took place May 22 between 3 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. in the 2800 block of North Southport Avenue and Aug. 22 about midnight in the 600 block of West Buckingham Place.
In the latest robbery, of the six attackers, all of whom were traveling in the car, police released detailed descriptions of two men. One is described as Hispanic, 19 to 21 years old, standing 6 feet tall, weighing about 145 pounds, and with an olive complexion. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. Another is described as black, between 19 and 22 years old, standing 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 165 pounds and wearing a white jacket.
In  the Southport robbery, the robber is described as a black man age 19 to 21 standing 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing between 170 and 180 pounds with a black haircut in a fade with a flat top, and having a gap between his front teeth. He was seen getting out of a car before the robbery, but no description of the car was available.

Lakeview passengers accused of hijacking taxi to avoid paying fare

A  man and woman from Lakeview were arrested Sunday night after attacking a cab driver and hijacking his taxi.
Brian Mosansky, 23, and Sarah Solma, 22, both of the 4000 block of North Ashland Avenue, took a taxi from 15 W. Hubbard St. to their Lakeview home just before midnight Sunday, and then refused to pay the $21 cab fare.
When the driver pulled up to the corner of Ashland Avenue and Irving Park Road, the police report said, Solma jumped out of the cab and began moving west. Mosansky remained in the cab's back seat, and "appeared to be removing money from his pants pocket," but then fled the cab after Solma.
The cab driver, a man from Rogers Park, made a U-turn, parked his cab, and followed the duo to a nearby Popeye's Chicken parking lot. He yelled at them to pay him for the ride, and Mosansky allegedly responded by punching the man and placing him in a headlock.
Solma tried to hit the victim in the head with her purse, the report said, but the victim was able to grab the purse from her hand before it struck him. She also tried to take his keys from his belt loop,  but wasn't able to.
The cab was equipped with a "smart key," which allowed Solma to enter the cab and drive away with it anyway.
Police officers arrived on the scene and arrested Mosansky, the report said; they waited until Solma returned and then arrested her as well. Both alleged offenders told police they had been drinking before the incident.
Solma and Mosansky were brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Tuesday afternoon and were each ordered held on $25,000 bonds. Both were charged with aggravated battery to a taxi driver, and Solma was also charged with vehicular hijacking.

$100K bail for man who tried to sexually assault woman, 72

A judge today set bail at $100,000 for a property manager from Skokie who is accused of breaking into a 72-year-old woman’s apartment and trying to sexually abuse her last week in Chicago's Lake View East neighborhood.
Malik Dervisevic,36, appeared before Judge James Brown, who set bail at $100,000 today. Prosecutors said Dervisevic has no criminal background.
Dervisevic, of the 7600 block of Long Avenue in Skokie, was charged with burglary, aggravated battery to a senior citizen and attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse, all of which are felonies.
Prosecutors said the victim had locked both locks on her door before she left for the store on the afternoon of June 7 in the 500 block of West Belmont Avenue.
But when she got home, noticed that only one of the locks was still locked. When she went inside, she saw Dervisevic, who is her building manager, in her apartment and trying to hide.
According a police report, Dervisevic said to her: “You can make this easy" before ordering her to lay on the bed.
When she wasn’t able to grab a knife from the kitchen, she picked up her cell phone and the two began struggling for it. She twisted her right wrist and Dervisevic fled.
The report said the victim was afraid to call police, but she iced her wrist and went to an immediate care clinic where a doctor said she suffered a fracture and she was given a cast.
Prosecutors said she was afraid because Dervisevic had previously threatened her.
On Thursday a Catholic Charities worker who was visiting the victim saw her wrist, learned what happened and called authorities, police said.
Dervisevic was arrested in the building’s office.

Convict arrested in Lakeview robberies of waitress, mom and kids at restaurant

A former Tennessee convict burst into a Lakeview neighborhood restaurant over the weekend, robbed a waitress and forced a suburban mother and her two children into a back bathroom before threatening to shoot them.
But the quick-thinking mother texted her husband, and police were able to arrest the suspect inside the Cassava bakery and smoothie shop.
William Castle, 43, was charged with aggravated robbery, unlawful restraint, kidnapping and attempted robbery in the incident Sunday evening.
The Buffalo Grove family was eating at Cassava at 3338 N. Clark St. about 6:10 p.m. when the suspect entered the kitchen area, grabbed a server by the collar and said, "Give me all the cash".
Cook County prosecutors said Castle claimed to have a gun and threatened to shoot the family if they called the police.
Castle ordered the 43-year-old mother, her son, 13, and her daughter, 10, into a rear bathroom. He demanded their cellphones, but the mother was able to text her husband moments before she handed her phone over.
"Don't come robber in here call 911," the police report quoted the woman as texting her husband.
The husband called police.
In the meantime, the robber demanded that the waitress shut all the lights off to make it appear as though the restaurant was closed. The suspect then grabbed the teenage waitress by the shoulders, shook her violently and tried to kiss her. As police arrived in front of the shop, the robber took the waitress to the back of the business. As the woman screamed and started to cry, he threatened to choke her if she didn't stop making noise.
The suspect then tried to run out the back of the store, police said. An officer stationed there arrested him at gunpoint, and several other officers handcuffed him,.
Castle was found with $333 in cash in his pocket.
Castle's record in Tennessee includes a 1993 conviction for attempted rape, robbery and kidnapping. In 1994 he was convicted of aggravated sexual battery, robbery and kidnapping and sentenced to 16 years in state prison.
Castle completed his parole in September, according to Tennessee state records. He was required to register as a sex offender.
