$250K bail for man accused of fondling at Union Station

A  judge today set bail at $250,000 for a Minneapolis Minn. man accused of fondling and punching a woman and then slugging a man who tried to help her in Union Station’s Great Hall Saturday morning.
Maurice James Scales, 27, of the 1000 block of Currie Avenue in Minneapolis Minn., was charged with felony criminal sexual abuse and misdemeanor battery.
The victim, a 24-year-old Johnsburg, Ill. woman, arrived to the station at 6:40 a.m. Saturday to catch a Metra train but found out there wasn’t one leaving until 8:35 a.m., so she stretched out on her side on a bench in the Great Hall area to wait.
About ten minutes later, she saw Scales sitting on the same bench and then felt something touching her buttocks but she initially ignored it. When it happened again she sat up and demanded to know what he was doing and screamed at him.
Scales told her to “be quiet, are you crazy,’’ and she began yelling for security. As she dialed 911 and told the dispatcher there was a “pervert’’ who refused to leave her alone, Scales punched her in the face three times.
A 33-year-old man who saw what was happening stepped in to help her, but Scales slugged him too.
Police apprehended Scales and arrested him at 7:25 a.m. at 2 S. Canal St. The incident was captured on video and Amtrak police are investigating.

A Southern New Mexico man has filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Deming and several Deming Police Officers after a January police stop turned into a complete nightmare
According to the lawsuit, David Eckert was pulled over by Deming police January 2 after failing to make a complete stop at a stop sign outside a Wal-Mart parking lot. After ordering Eckert out of his vehicle, police began insisting that Eckert was clenching his buttocks, claiming the action was probable cause to suspect illegal drugs were hidden inside his anal cavity.
During an interview with KOB 4 Eyewitness News, Eckert’s attorney, Shannon Kennedy, said law enforcement then successfully obtained a cavity search warrant after contacting a local judge. Police then drove to a local hospital where a doctor refused to carry out the search, telling police the task was “unethical.” Despite the warrant only covering Luna County, Police illegally drove Eckert to Silver City’s Gila Regional Medical Center in Grant County, where he soon underwent what many would consider outright torture.
Medical records released to KOB 4 News revealed in graphic detail just how far police and doctors went, reminiscent of something one would expect to hear from Abu Ghraib prison.
Being held against his will, doctors x-rayed Eckert’s abdominal cavity, only to have the results find absolutely nothing. Incredibly, Deming police were not satisfied.
Doctors were then ordered to examine and penetrate Eckert’s anus with their fingers, searching deep inside Eckert’s body without his permission, only to find nothing. Unbelievably, doctors then proceeded to penetrate Eckert’s anus a second time, again finding absolutely nothing.
Clearly innocent after undergoing procedures usually reserved for maximum security prisoners, Eckert was then forced by doctors and police to receive an enema. Doctors filled Eckert’s anal cavity with large amounts of water, forcing Eckert to defecate as doctors picked through his fecal matter, only to find nothing.
Disgustingly, Eckert was subjected to a second enema, yet again defecating all over the floor as police looked on. Once again, doctors came up empty handed
The torture continued as police ordered a third enema, again producing absolutely no drugs whatsoever.
Eckert was then thrown back under the x-ray machine, blasted with radiation for a second time, only to have the same result, no drugs detected inside Eckert’s body.

Likely exhausted at this point, Eckert’s ordeal was far from over. Not finding any drugs, doctors then decided to take Eckert to the operating table where he would be sedated against his will and prepared for surgery. Doctors then proceeded to carry out a colonoscopy, shoving a camera deep into Eckert, reaching as far as his large intestine. To no surprise, Eckert was not concealing any drugs inside his body

Also raising questions about the wisdom of the cigarette tax, which opponents say will dampen retail sales and result in the illegal sale of loose cigarettes, was Ald. Carrie Austin, 34th, the City Council Budget Committee chairman.

"The cigarette tax has the benefit of leading to a healthier Chicago,”  Ald. Joe Moore, 49th, said. “It results in a healthier populace: less people are smoking, and less people need health care. So it’s a win-win for everybody.”
If people stop smoking then how does the city collect $10 million dollars from the cigarette tax increase Ald. Genius Joe Moore?

While common citizens were being robbed and enduring long waits for the police, one 19th district resident enjoyed premium police service
At 4:06AM, a 19th district car that is assigned to park in the alley behind Mayor Rahm Emanuel's home reported "suspicious activity."

A white male walked through a gate a couple of doors away. The officer reported that the man was "knocking on a door, coughing and stuff."

Within 45 seconds, another police unit was told to go to the mayor's alley to help deal with the "suspicious man." At the same time another 19th district car that is assigned to the mayor's house also moved in on the suspicious man.

Friends, neighbors, you can relax. The mayor is safe. The "suspicious man" was setting up for a Saturday morning yard sale. Don't you beating victims feel stupid for trying to suck police protection away from important matters like suspicious yard sale set-up?

Gang summit attracts few gang members

Billed as a "National Unity Summit" for gang members from across the city, hardly any showed up to Saturday's event, a gathering endorsed by the likes of the Rev. Al Sharpton and other civil rights activists and clergy. Sharpton did not attend the event.
The audience comprised mostly grieving relatives of Chicago's homicide victims and representatives from anti-violence groups (about 20 people)
The Rev. Gregory Tatum, a Los Angeles-based minister originally from Chicago, and his wife paid for the summit. He said he tried to provide busing for 200 to 300 gang members from around the city, but the event drew no more than a couple of dozen gang members.
Tio Hardiman also said attendance Saturday was low because many gang members sleep until the late morning or early afternoon. Saturday's program ran from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FBI: Chicago officially America's murder capital

Statistics released by the FBI earlier this week show that Chicago passed New York as America's murder capital in 2012 despite the Windy City only having a third of the Big Apple's population.
The FBI recorded 500 murders in Chicago in 2012, up from 431 in 2011. New York reported 419 murders in 2012, down from 515 the year before.

Man convicted of illegal sale of guns in Chicago

 A federal jury found David "Big Man" Lewisbey guilty Friday of a gun-smuggling scheme that involved the illegal sale of more than a dozen guns on some of Chicago's most violent streets.
The verdict followed a week and a half long trial in which Lewisbey sought to cast himself as a gun enthusiast and marijuana seller as opposed to an illegal transporter of guns across state lines.
Lewisbey was attending the University of Houston in the spring of 2013 when prosecutors said he flew back to Illinois to attend a gun show in Indiana. Then, prosecutors say, over a two-day period he helped sell 43 guns to a government informant, sharing in a more than $20,000 profit.
Fourteen of the guns were traced directly back to sellers that Lewisbey frequently bought guns from

Georgia triple-murder suspect may be headed to Chicago

A  man suspected of shooting to death a 12-year-old boy, his mother and a 19-year-old man in Georgia this week may be heading to Chicago.
Robert Bell, 33, is wanted on three counts of murder and also one count of aggravated assault for wounding a fourth person, according to police in Gwinnett County, Ga.
In an alert, they said he may be traveling to Chicago or Albany, Ga. or Crossville, Tenn. Police did not say why they think Bell could be headed to Chicago.
Police said Angelina Benton, 34, had allowed Bell and his wife to stay at her home as a “charitable act.” On Sunday, Bell killed her, her 12-year-old son Joseph McDonald and her 19-year-old godson Raynord Daniel. He also wounded her 23-year-old boyfriend, Justin Cato, in the leg.

Cook County Jail's inmate population rising

After dipping to 8,900 in 2011, the average annual jail population, primarily inmates awaiting trial, has been on the rise, with the daily count now frequently more than 10,000, the highest totals since 2007. About 5 percent of detainees at the jail have been awaiting trial for more than two years.
With that rise in population, Chicago has regained its spot, once held by Houston, as home of the most populous single-site jail in the country
