Two teens shot by police on Far South Side

Two 15-year-old boys were shot by police Sunday evening in the Princeton Park neighborhood.
Patrick Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police union that represents rank-and-file officers, said the shooting happened when the driver of a car police had stopped tried to pull away, dragging a passenger that tried to escape the back seat.
Police suspected the car was stolen and stopped it about 5 p.m. Sunday near 95th and LaSalle streets.
"All of a sudden you have a passenger in the driver's back seat trying to get out, driver puts the vehicle in reverse, it's now heading toward officers that were approaching it. (The driver) puts it in drive, dragging the passenger in back seat. Officers open fire at that point, worried about the safety of the individual trying to get out of the car," Camden said.
One officer fired the shots, Camden said.
A statement released by the police department's Office of News Affairs said the car's driver fled on foot and someone else jumped in the driver's seat and put the car into reverse. The officer then opened fire, the statement said.
There was no indication that any officers were injured in the shooting.
Two 15-year-old boys were taken with gunshot wounds to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
One of those shot was in serious-to-critical condition, but both were expected to survive.
Camden said a replica weapon was found in the car but that there was no exchange of gunfire. The statement from News Affairs said a weapon was recovered.
