A 15-year-old boy is the second person charged in the killing of a teenager fatally beaten on New Year's Day on the Southwest Side.

Vincent Lopez, 23, of the 5800 block of South Whipple Street, was charged with murder in August after being arrested in July on an unrelated burglary charge. Lopez is being held without bail on charges including murder, carjacking and arson.
Velasquez, along with a 21-year-old woman, was in the 2900 block of West 40th Street in the Brighton Park neighborhood about 6 a.m. Jan. 1 when he stopped the Chrysler Sebring he was driving because a Chevrolet Suburban was blocking his path.

The Sebring later was found burned in the 4200 block of South Campbell Avenue, a little less than a mile away from where the attack took place.
The Cook County medical examiner's office determined Velasquez died from blunt force trauma to the head in a homicide.

He originally was ordered held in lieu of $80,000 bond in that case, but in August, he was ordered held without bail after he was charged with murder in Velasquez's slaying.

Life sentence for 2005 double murder

A Chicago man was sentenced to life in prison today in a 2005 double murder at a Southwest Side convenience store that police solved in part because of lottery tickets he purchased moments before the killings.
Timothy Fountain, 43, was convicted last October of first-degree murder and armed robbery in the 2005 shooting deaths of Graciela Rodriguez, 37, and Nicholas Guerrero, 75, inside Maggy’s Food Store in the 4400 block of South California Avenue.
Judge Charles Burns sentenced Fountain to life without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 30 years for the armed robbery count.
Prosecutors said Fountain, a convicted robber, went into the store and ordered two Pick-Four lottery tickets from Rodriguez, a clerk, before announcing a robbery, grabbing cash from the register and forcing her at gunpoint to a back room, where he shot her in the head. On his way out of the store, Fountain shot and killed Guerrero, a grandfather of 15 who lived next door and visited the store every day to chat with Rodriguez.
Surveillance footage of the robbery was too grainy to positively identify the killer, and a composite sketch drawn from a teenage witness who saw the gunman outside the store minutes before the robbery did not yield any leads.
A few weeks later, with the case going cold, a detective on a hunch entered one of the lottery ticket numbers – 5157 – into a police database of convicted robbers.
Fountain’s name popped up because he had used the address of 5157 S. Union Ave. -- his mother’s house -- when he was arrested in the late 1990s. Detectives then showed a photo array to the witness who had seen the gunman, and he identified Fountain.
In the ensuing investigation, DNA found under Guerrero’s fingernails was matched to Fountain, indicating the two had struggled before Guerrero was shot

Intoxicated driver killed baby in womb

A  judge set bail this week at $750,000 for a 21-year-old motorist accused of being drunk and high on cocaine when he slammed into another car being driven a woman who was 9 months pregnant, causing the death of the unborn child.
Benjamin Pilar, of an unknown address, was booked into jail Friday after a judge set the $750,000 bail

Pilar is charged with reckless homicide of an unborn child, aggravated DUI resulting in bodily harm and three counts of misdemeanor DUI. He also was ticketed for driving without a license, failure to provide insurance, failure to maintain lanes and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
An autopsy Friday determined Jose Luis Escobar Jr., of the 2500 block of Kenilworth Avenue in Berwyn, died of intrauterine fetal demise and placental abruption due to abdominal trauma from the motor vehicle crash.
Pilar was behind the wheel of a Pontiac Grand Am when he plowed into a Cadillac being driven by a 21-year-old woman Tuesday about 3 p.m. in the 3500 block of South California Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
When police got there, Pilar was slumped over in the driver’s seat with his hands and upper body in the passenger seat, and the woman was outside of the Cadillac, sitting on a curb holding her head with a towel.
The woman told police her head and back hurt, and she was 9 months pregnant.
Ambulances took her and Pilar to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Initial tests there showed Pilar’s blood alcohol level was 0.254 percent – more than three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent -- and about an hour later 0.217 percent.
He also had traces of cocaine in his system.
The woman was treated in the hospital, but doctors determined that the baby had died in the womb, police said. The baby was pronounced dead Thursday at 8:15 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital

Chicago man charged in fatal hit-and-run

A Chicago man is facing multiple charges in connection with a hit-and-run Thursday night that killed a Southwest Side woman and injured another.
Fernando Marin, 40, of the 4500 block of South Drake Avenue, was speeding down South Homan Avenue toward the intersection with South Archer Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood about 8:40 p.m. Thursday, according to court documents.
Ida Quintanilla, 58, was carrying groceries, had the walk signal and was crossing Archer at the Homan intersection with her sister,
Marin allegedly attempted to turn left onto Archer as the green light was turning yellow, but he failed to yield to Quintanilla.
Marin allegedly lost control of the truck before running over Quintanilla and dragging her under the truck.
Quintanilla's sister yelled at Marin as he drove away but he did not slow down.
Quintanilla, of the 2600 block of West Montgomery Avenue, suffered severe head injuries, had a wheel run over her midsection and suffered broken legs, among other injuries.
She was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead there.
After dragging Quintanilla, witnesses said Marin made a right turn and drove the wrong way down South Christiana Avenue, court documents state. A 35-year-old woman also sustained injuries in the incident.
Police said a witness provided a license plate number for the red Chevrolet Suburban truck involved in the incident, and police traced it to the suspect.
The truck belonged to Marin’s girlfriend. It had a cracked grill, and blood was recovered from the vehicle.

He is charged with leaving the scene of accident that resulted in injury or death, driving with a revoked license, not giving the right of way to a pedestrian and not having insurance.
Marin has two prior DUI charges, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jim Pontrelli said in court Sunday. He pleaded guilty in a November 2008 DUI in Chicago, and had his license suspended or revoked
