Neighbor credited with saving boy, 3, from attacking dogs

Willie Riley was cooking a meal in his South Shore home when a little girl jumped over the fence and said her 3-year-old cousin was being attacked by two pit bulls.
He grabbed a wood plank. "I jumped the fence, went in, fought the dogs off and got the little boy," he told reporters Monday evening.
Riley said he brought the boy out of the house and across the street to a fire station, then went back for two other kids who were upstairs in the house in the 7300 block of South Kingston Avenue.
The boy suffered puncture wounds to his ears, neck, torso and legs, but police said his injuries were not life-threatening. He was being treated at Comer Children's Hospital.
"There was a neighbor that walked by, jumped over the fence, wrestled the dogs, basically ripped the dog away from the child, and then got back through the fence and probably saved the baby's life," said Fire Capt. Bob Martin.
Neighbors said the boy was visiting the home when he was attacked in the dining room around 3:30 p.m.

3-Week-Old Girl Mauled To Death By Pit Bull (The Non-violent breed) In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - A three-week-old girl is dead after being mauled by a pit bull on Detroit’s west side.
Sgt. Eren Stephens said the incident happened inside of a home on Staheilin street, near Tireman and the Southfield Freeway, around 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
Investigators say the 24-year-old mother went inside of the home and placed her infant daughter, who was strapped in a car seat, on the floor. The mother walked away for a moment and when she returned, she saw the pit bull attacking her daughter.
The child was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital for medical treatment, but died from the injuries.
Police say the mother told them she didn’t know the dog was loose in the home. Stephens said it’s too early to decide if charges will be filed in the case.
The dog was removed from the home Thursday night and taken to an animal control facility.
Neighbors expressed shock and sadness upon hearing of the girl’s death.
“This is ridiculous and you see it on the news every day about these dogs, okay, you see it every day. You see it’s about kids, okay, protect your kids. If you love them, you had them, you have to protect them,” said one neighbor

Berwyn Officer injured as 2 pit bulls shot after attack

A Berwyn officer suffered a leg injury when police shot two pit bulls after a small dog was killed and its owner attacked this morning.
The officer was treated and released from a local hospital after suffering minor injuries to his left and right calves, possibly from something sent flying during the shooting of the first pit bull, but not from a bullet. The woman who tried to protect her small dog was being treated for injuries including a bite from the pit bull that attacker her dog.
The woman was walking her dog around 7:40 a.m. near the intersection of 27th Street and Ridgeland Avenue when a pit bull ran up, according to Luis Lopez, who lives across the street. The pit bull was known in the neighborhood for attacking other dogs, so the woman scooped her small dog into her arms.
But the pit bull attacked her and mauled the small dog, killing it, Lopez said. It then ran back into a yard, where there was another pit bull.
Police received numerous 911 calls about the attack, and arrived to find that one pit bull had gone under a fence and attacked the small dog.
One of the dogs jumped the front fence, and started after both officers and children who were walking to school in the area. The second dog also jumped the fence in the back of the yard. Officers tried to subdue the dogs but had to shoot them, with the officer injured as the first dog was being shot

South Elgin officer saves woman, nephew from pit bull

Police Sgt. Craig Steurer heard the cries for help as he arrived at a South Elgin home after responding to a 911 call of a dog attack.
"It sounded bad to me," he said of the radio call he heard Saturday afternoon. "It just wasn't the normal bite and let go."
Steurer eventually had to shoot to death a pit bull that was attacking a woman and had already bitten her young nephew.
The dog belonged to the woman's roommate but had been living in the home for only about a week after its original owner moved from the area, Steurer said.
When Steurer arrived at the home in the 0-99 block of Churchill Court, he walked in through the garage and heard the cries, which led him upstairs.
"I turned and looked. There was a medium-size brown pit bull," he said. The dog's mouth was clamped on the 41-year-old woman's forearm.
She "was covered head to toe in smeared blood," Steurer said. The dog was "actively chewing and pulling on her right arm. I was thinking, what am I going to do to get this dog off of her?"
Steurer said he grabbed the dog by its neck, which caused it to let go of the woman.
"He dug his feet in, turned his head … toward me and growled," Steurer said.
Fearing another attack, Steurer said he decided to shoot the dog.
At that point, other officers had arrived and tended to the woman, who was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin and later transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Officers also found the woman's 5-year-old nephew and 11-year-old niece in a bedroom.
Steurer said the dog first attacked the boy and then turned on the woman after she intervened. The boy's sister brought him into a bedroom, shut the door and called 911, Steurer said. The boy suffered bites to his arm and hand.

Pit Bulls attack woman, police officer

A woman is recovering at a hospital this afternoon after she and a Chicago Police officer were bitten multiple times by one of two dogs which was shot by the injured officer this week in the Little Villag neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
The woman is in fair condition this afternoon, said Mount Sinai Hospital spokeswoman Dianne Hunter. The officer has been discharged.
Two grey pit-bull terriers began attacking the woman while she was coming home from the laundry in the 2600 block of West 21st Place about 3:40 pm. Monday.
As she tried to enter the back of her home, one dog began gnawing on her right hand several times and then went for her neck.
She lifted her injured arm to defend herself and was bitten in the underarm area.
She began screaming, catching the attention of a neighbor who threw a piece of meat at the dogs to distract them as the woman was on the ground.
The dogs then attacked a responding Ogden District police officer who was exiting his police vehicle.
When one dog bit his left arm, the officer used his baton on the dog to try and free himself -- but when that didn’t work, he shot the dog in its front “shoulder” area and the dog loosened its grip.
The officer, who was working without the help of a partner that day, fired six times and those casings were recovered on the scene.
An ambulance took the woman, who suffered five puncture wounds to her right hand and an “open wound’’ to her armpit area, to the hospital.
The officer was also taken to Mount Sinai where he was treated for bites to his left arm and right calf and knee. He suffered muscle injuries that were serious.
Both dogs were impounded, but officials determined only one was the "biter dog,''.
That dog, a 1½-year old, pit bull mix named “Blue,’’ remains in the care of animal care authorities Wednesday after it was treated for a gunshot wound to its leg.
“The injuries are not thought to be life-threatening,’’ .
The wounded dog will remain there until an investigation is completed that will determine if the dog is safe to own without restrictions.
Blue has not been taken away from its owne. The owner redeemed the other dog.

Pregnant woman dies after being mauled to death by pit bull dog in her living room (Pit bull the non-violent breed)

A pregnant woman was found by her husband in her home mauled to death by one of their pet pit bull terriers.
Darla Napora, 32, was bitten dozens of times and found covered in blood outstretched on their living room floor in Pacifica, California.
Police say the two-year-old unneutered pit bull believed to be responsible was hovering around the woman, who had major injuries to her upper body and face.
'When they arrived, they found the victim laying in her own front living room; she was not breathing, unresponsive and had major trauma to her upper body,' said Pacifica Police Captain Dave Bretini.
'The husband stated that when he got home, at about noon, he found his wife with their pit bull hovering over her
ce shot the blood covered animal dead as it tried to escape from the back garden whilst officers conducted their investigation.
'The last thing we wanted to happen was for the dog to get out and start attacking bystanders or be loose in the neighborhood,' Bertini said.
'So as soon as the dog got out of the backyard, the decision was immediately made to put that dog down and that's why the dog was shot three times by two officers on scene.'
Locals had strong reactions to Mrs Napora's death and many said they didn't know the couple had dogs as they hadn’t seen them outside.
Neighbour Tom Lujan believes pit bulls are dangerous: 'I wouldn't have one, and I wouldn't want my family around one,' he said.
The Napora's next door neighbour surprisingly said the dogs had always been well behaved.
'We shared a fence with them and if our dogs were barking at each other she'd call them off and they'd back off. They responded very well.'
For Greg Napora the tragic attack came out of the blue as they had had the dog since it was a puppy.
Police said there were no prior problems at the household and no reason to expect the dog attack.
'Eventually we're going to find out if there's anything physically or medically wrong with the dog that may have caused this attack,' Bertini said.
The couple owned another 6-year-old pit bull who has been spayed.
The other dog was taken to the Peninsula Humane Society for examination although Police do not believe the other pit bull had anything to do with the attack.
An autopsy for the woman and a necropsy for the dog were scheduled for Friday.
It is unknown how far along Darla was with her pregnancy.
