Off-duty Police Officer shot while sitting on porch on South Side
An off-duty Chicago police officer was shot in the legs early this morning as he
sat on a back porch with another officer in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on
the South Side.
The shots apparently came from train tracks near the home in the 9700 block of South Genoa Avenue around 1:30 a.m., police said. A bullet went through the officer's right leg and pierced his left leg, according to officers on the scene.
The officer, 38, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and released a few hours later.
Police said it was unclear if the gunfire was directed at the officers. Police found shell casings near the Metra tracks behind the home and were looking for at least one person who may have fled west from the scene. A car was found abandoned about a mile away and police were trying to determine if it was used by the shooter. No one was in custody.
