Woman dies after falling into river along Mag Mile

Firefighters put a ladder down near that spot where a woman was reported in the water and a diver climbed into the water.
The diver found Alicia Garnett and pulled her to the edge of the river around 4:15 a.m. Firefighters waiting on the walkway helped pull her out and placed her into an ambulance, which took her to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where the 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. Garnett was from Dallas, Texas
Police were told that Garnett was in town with friends and apparently fell into the water while she was throwing snowballs

48-year-old man shot on the Mag Mile

The 48-year-old man was in his vehicle when he was shot in the back in the 100 block of East Superior Street about 11 p.m.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition had stabilized
Police said the Frisco, Texas man, a guest in a hotel in the 200 block East Walton Street, told officers he was driving a rented 2014 Jeep Patriot at Superior Street and Michigan Avenue when he heard his driver’s side rear window shatter. At first, he thought someone knocked out his window and he fled, going northbound on Michigan Avenue.
The hotel valet parked the vehicle and once he got into his room, he found his t-shirt was “wet and full of blood’’ and realized he was shot on the left side of his chest and his left rear shoulder.  He notified the front desk clerk and police and an ambulance came to the hotel.

24-year-old shot in Galewood

At about 6:15 p.m. in the Galewood neighborhood on the Northwest Side, a 24-year-old male suffered a graze wound to the head during another shooting in the 2100 block of North Mulligan Avenue

23 year old man shot in Chatham

A man shot in the chest about 11:50 p.m. in the city's East Chatham neighborhood.
The victim, 23, was standing on a sidewalk in the 900 block of East 82^nd Street when two males approached him on foot and fired shots at him. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where’ his condition had stabilized

In the city’s Gresham neighborhood about 8:30 p.m. in the 8900 block of South Union Avenue, someone shot a male in the leg. The victim, whose age was not available, was taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn

On the Far South Side’s West Pullman neighborhood about 8:20 p.m., someone shot two males in 300 block of West 119^th Street. One victim suffered a graze wound to the abdomen while the second was shot in the right arm

49-year-old man shot during robbery attempt in South Deering

About 4:15 a.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of East 107th Street in the Trumbull Park neighborhood on the Far South Side, a 49-year-old man was shot in the leg during an armed robbery attempt, police said. The victim was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital where his condition was stabilized.

3 juveniles accused of stealing iPhones on Oak Street off Mag Mile

Three juvenile girls were in court today accused of robbing and punching two 14-year-old girls on Oak Street off Michigan Avenue Tuesday evening in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
The victims, both of Chicago, were not injured but had their cell phones taken.
Police responded to call of a robbery in the 0-100 block of East Oak Street about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and met the two 14-year-old girls who told them one of the three suspects approached one of the girls and asked to use her cell phone.
The girl complied and when she walked away with the phone, the other two suspects confronted the victims and began to punch them and grabbed a second cell phone.
A witness saw the victims screaming and chased the suspects eastbound on Oak Street. The three girls were taken into custody about 20 minutes after the robbery.

A 15-year-old Florida girl was punched when she tried to help a 51-year-old Michigan woman being robbed Friday night on the Mag Mile by eight juveniles.
Two 15-year-old girls, a 14-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl, three 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy were arrested and charged with robbery.
One of the 15-year-old girls, who punched the Florida teen who tried to help, also was charged with battery, and one of the boys was additionally charged with theft because police said he had another person's iPhone that had been either lost or stolen earlier Friday at North Avenue Beach.
Their names were not disclosed because they are juveniles, but they all are from Chicago.
According to a police report, about 7 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue, the teens grabbed and held the 51-year-old Muskegon, Mich., victim while one of them took her iPhone from her pocket.
A 15-year-old Florida girl who did not know the victim tried to help the woman but was punched in the face by one of the teens.
Officers who had been called to the scene arrested the group of teens.
Police said one of the boys arrested was found with a black iPhone, which he claimed belonged to his mother, but police found it really belonged to a person who told police he'd either lost it or it had been stolen earlier that day on North Avenue Beach. That boy was charged with theft of lost or mislaid property

Woman charged with leaving grandchildren, 4 and 5, in car

Child endangerment charges have been filed against a woman who left her two grandchildren, 4 and 5, inside a car with its windows rolled up for nearly an hour in 86-degree heat while returning face cream at Macy’s Water Tower
Shirley Sims, 53, of the 1500 block of South Karlov Avenue, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the life and health of a child.
A Water Tower security officer noticed the car parked illegally in a tow zone  in the 100 block of East Pearson Street, its horn beeping, and flagged down police around 5:50 p.m. Sunday.
Patrol officers spotted a 5-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother unattended inside a gray 2001 Ford Taurus, its engine off and the windows rolled up. 
When officers asked the little girl to unlock the door, she told police she had “been waiting for grandma for an hour,’’ Shirley Sims, 53, of the 1500 block of South Karlov Avenue, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the life and health of a child.
A sergeant helped the children out, gave them water and took them to the Near North District police station, the report said. Police said the children were not injured.
Sims was arreted when she showed up where the car was parked around 6:30 p.m. Authorities later learned they’d been left for more like 50 minutes.

Boy, 14, arrested after dropping gun on Mag Mile

A 14-year-old boy was arrested after he dropped a silver and black handgun while crossing North Michigan Avenue.
As two police officers watched near Chicago Avenue, the boy bent down and picked up the gun from the median and tucked it into his waistband late Thursday afternoon
The officers arrested him and he was cited in a juvenile petition with unlawful use of a weapon, police said. The boy spent the night at the Juvenile Detention Center

Woman's report of Mag Mile robbery unfounded

Chicago police have discredited a 68-year-old woman's claim that she was robbed of tens of thousands of dollars of jewelry during a brazen attack Wednesday afternoon along the Magnificent Mile.
The woman originally told officers that a group of six to eight young men robbed her of more than $135,000 in jewelry as she walked along North Michigan Avenue.
But on Thursday night, Area Central property crimes detectives determined that the story she gave police didn't add up with surveillance video footage that was examined.
Chicago police have determined that the reported Michigan Avenue robbery of a 68-year-old woman is unfounded. Detectives confronted the victim with inconsistencies between her account of the incident and recovered video, and learned that the story was not true
The woman's story also raised red flags with investigators when they weren't able to find video footage of the robbery on Michigan Avenue or any witnesses to the crime. A
s of Thursday night authorities hadn't determined whether to push for charges against her for filing a false police report

Group robs woman on Michigan Avenue of up to $200K in jewelry, cash

A 69-year-old woman was robbed of as much as $200,000 in jewelry, cash and other items by a group of young men in front of a North Michigan Avenue department store this afternoon, authorities said.
A victim was robbed of her possessions in the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue about 12:20 p.m., said Police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.
The victim was not injured in the robbery
The woman, age 69, was robbed by a group of at least three and as many and eight young men.
The woman told police the group surrounded her, and demanded her money and jewelry.
The robbers took several thousand dollars in cash and several pieces of jewelry, including one diamond brooch valued at about $50,000, authorities said. The woman told police the value of the items, including the jewelry, cash and her purse, was as much as $200,000

Police have released few details about the situation that unfolded in the area of North Michigan and East Chicago avenues about 7:15 p.m.
Authorities made "a number" of arrests after being called to the area

Photographers shot chaotic video of police officers and vehicles swarming Michigan Avenue near Huron and detaining several young people around 7:30 p.m.
Chicago Police News Affairs confirmed officers arrested “a number of offenders” and said charges were pending. Details weren’t available.
But community activist Andrew Holmes, who happened to be shopping with a relative in the upscale retail district, described a scene in which hundreds of young people misbehaved, with some of them harassing and attacking people on the street.
“They assaulted a Chicago police officer who was on a mounted horse. And all of a sudden, they assaulted the citizens walking the streets – just normal citizens shopping, enjoying the weather,” Holmes told CBS 2’s Chris Martinez. “I caution those parents if their child has been arrested … You need to think about your child. Just don’t say the Chicago police picked on your child, when we watched all the assault going on, especially by teen women.”
Chicago’s Michigan Avenue and nearby retail strips were beset by numerous wilding, or “youth mob,” episodes the past two summers.
The phenomenon continues in Chicago and its suburbs. In February, a disturbance broke out at Ford City Mall after a meet-and-greet appearance by the boy band Mindless Behavior. A mall official blamed groups of “older youths” and said it had nothing to do with the event

Man dies after falling down smokestack on roof of Mag Mile hotel

A man trying to take a photo from the top of the Intercontinental Hotel on Michigan Avenue died after falling 22 feet down a smokestack.
It took rescue crews four hours to remove the 23-year-old man from Minnesota, at one point cutting through a wall and wedging boards in the chute to keep him from falling farther down.
Rescue crews responded to the hotel at 505 N. Michigan Ave. around 1:10 a.m. after someone called and reported that a person threatening to jump from the roof. Firefighters later learned the man fell down the smokestack
They discovered that the man had fallen 22 feet down a 6-foot wide smokestack and was wedged where the chute angled before dropping 42 floors. Crews cut into the wall and used wood boards to block the man from falling any farther
The man was able to communicate with his girlfriend, either with phone calls or text messages, Ahlheim said, but firefighters lost contact with him around 3:15 a.m.

Attempted murder charges against teen in car that tried to hit Police Officer

Attempted murder charges have been filed against a teen who was riding in a car that tried to strike a police officer after a store robbery off North Michigan Avenue.
The officer fired a shot at the car as it sped from the American Apparel store at 46 E. Walton St. around 6 p.m. on Nov. 18 but he did not hit anyone.
Devontae Anderson, 17, of the 6100 block of South Eberhart Avenue, has been charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, aggravated assault to a peace officer and retail theft.
In court today a judge set bail at $100,000 for Anderson, who has a juvenile background of retail theft and a battery which occurred four days prior to the Mag Mile incident.
Just four days before the robbery, Anderson had pleaded guilty to battery.
On Nov. 18, Anderson and the three others parked near American Apparel. He and two others went and grabbed $2,568 worth of clothing from racks and ran back to the car.
A police officer spotted them and stood in front of the car and ordered them to stop.

The driver headed toward the officer, who jumped out of the way and fired one shot through the windshield on the driver’s side but didn’t hit anyone. The car, with Anderson in the back seat, smashed into two parked cars while fleeing.
The four split the proceeds, and Anderson gave the driver $40 for the damage to his car.
Anderson was arrested after he told a friend about the robbery and the friend went to police.
Warrants have been issued for the three other people

Man shot on Mag Mile

The downtown shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. just off Michigan Avenue. A 31-year-old man was standing next to his car when someone in an SUV pulled up, asked him what "he was about" and shouted a gang slogan and opened fire.
The SUV, gray or silver, almost hit a Streets and Sanitation tow truck as it sped west on Ontario and south on Rush Street. The tow truck driver radioed a description of the SUV.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was in critical condition.
