A Berwyn officer suffered a leg injury when police shot two pit bulls after a
small dog was killed and its owner attacked this morning.
The officer was treated and released from a local hospital after suffering
minor injuries to his left and right calves, possibly from something sent flying
during the shooting of the first pit bull, but not from a bullet.
The woman who tried to protect her small dog was being treated for injuries
including a bite from the pit bull that attacker her dog.
The woman was walking her dog around 7:40 a.m. near the intersection of 27th
Street and Ridgeland Avenue when a pit bull ran up, according to Luis Lopez, who
lives across the street. The pit bull was known in the neighborhood for
attacking other dogs, so the woman scooped her small dog into her arms.
But the pit bull attacked her and mauled the small dog,
killing it, Lopez said. It then ran back into a yard, where there was another
pit bull.
Police received numerous 911 calls about the attack, and arrived to find that
one pit bull had gone under a fence and attacked the small dog.
One of the dogs jumped the front fence, and started after both officers and
children who were walking to school in the area. The
second dog also jumped the fence in the back of the yard. Officers tried to
subdue the dogs but had to shoot them, with the officer injured as the first dog
was being shot
