A South Side man died this morning, two days after gunmen emerged from a gangway in the Englewood neighborhood and shot him in the head.
Christopher Abernathy, 24, of the 7900 block of South Ada Street, was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. at Stroger Hospital.
Police said that Abernathy, a parolee, was walking on the street in the 5500 block of South Hoyne Avenue at about 8 p.m. Tuesday when two assailants approached and opened fire.
Authorities didn't offer a motive for the slaying, but Abernathy, who police said was affiliated with the Conservative Vice Lord street gang, has multiple arrests and convictions on his record.
In April, he was placed on parole from the Vandalia Correctional Center on a 2009 conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to court records. In July, he pleaded guilty to violating the city's gang loitering ordinance and was sentenced to five days in Cook County jail, court records show.
