Shots fired as brothers bicker; bystander, 74, killed by stray bullet

A dispute simmering between two brothers for several days resulted in one brother shooting the other and also fatally wounding a 74-year-old man who was visiting friends at the time of the West Side attack this morning.
The shootings took place about 6 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Harding Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood. Webster Gater, of the 2000 block of South 2nd Avenue in Maywood, was declared dead at 6:35 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Gater had lived in Lawndale with his family for more than 30 years, and moved to Maywood in 2008, said his wife, Marion Gater. He was visiting friends in his old neighborhood at the time of the shooting, she said.
Police initially identified Gater, the father of five children, as a maintenance man at a nearby building, but his wife said he had retired from doing maintenance after the owner of the apartments where he worked for many years died.
Gater was caught in a dispute between the two brothers, both believed to be in their 30s, that had been festering for several days and flared up into an argument early today.
This morning, the fight started inside, then moved outside, with one brother, armed with a handgun, following the other out the front door before shooting him several times, in both legs. During the shooting, the 74-year-old, who was in a gangway between the brothers' home and one next door, was shot in the head.
The gunman then fled, and was still at large this evening.
The wounded brother also was being treated this afternoon at Mount Sinai, where he initially was considered in serious condition
