Charges have been filed against the father of a 7-year-old boy who police say accidentally shot his 7-month-old brother.
Levar Jones, 26, of the 6300 block of South Laflin Avenue, was charged with felony counts of reckless conduct and having an invalid firearm owners identification card. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of endangering the health and life of a child.
Cook County Criminal Court Judge Donald Panarese ordered Jones held on $150,000 bail in a bond hearing midday today.
Police said Jones was ineligible to hold a FOID, but did not release information about why.
Jones’ 7-year-old son found a loaded gun under a bed in his Englewood neighborhood home and accidentally shot his younger brother through the top of his left leg as the toddler was sleeping in his bed. The gun belonged to Jones.
Police and paramedics were called to the home at about 8:10 p.m. and the 7-month-old was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. He was initially described as being in serious-to-critical condition, but authorities later said his condition had stabilized and his life did not appear to be in danger.
The 7-month-old’s mother, who heard the gunshot and found her boy bleeding, was not charged.
