Man shot dead in West Pullman

Police found a man in his 20s dead on a Far South Side parkway early Thursday morning .
Police found the dead man about 12:50 a.m. near the corner of 122nd Street and Union Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood. He had been shot in the head.

Woman shot during home invasion

A woman was shot and seriously wounded in a home invasion in the Austin neighborhood this evening.
The woman, age 47, was shot at her home in the 5000 block of West Van Buren Street about 6:10 p.m.
The woman was at home in her room when she was confronted by a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a mask.
The woman struggled with the man and was shot, then chased him, and then saw a second home invader near stairs leading down from her room. The two invaders fled out the front door of the residence.
The woman suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and leg and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, where she was in serious condition, but had been stabilized

3 charged in death of man found in burning garbage can

Murder charges have been filed against two men and a juvenile in last year’s slaying of a man found burned beyond recognition in a trash can in the Logan Square neighborhood.
Reynaldo Ocampo, 21, Alejandro Ocampo, 17 and Joseph Saleski, 24, were each charged with murder and aggravated kidnapping for ransom. The Ocampos are related and live in the same home.
Rodolfo Hernandez-Bey, 39, was found around 9 p.m. on Nov. 6 last year in a burning garbage can in the 3100 block of North Central Park Avenue. An autopsy found that Hernandez-Bey, of the 6100 block of North Harding Avenue, died of strangulation and his death was ruled a homicide.
The Ocampos live in the 5000 block of West 30th Street and Saleski in the 1900 Block of South 48th Court.
The prosecutor said the victim left his home and his wife on Nov. 6 and never came back. The victim’s wife had gathered $23,000 cash and jewelry to meet their ransom demands after her husband was kidnapped by the three and duct taped in a garage.
“She was told she would see him and he’d be released’’ after the money was given to them.

After firefighters put out the fire and the victim’s body was discovered, fingerprints belonging to one of the defendants was discovered on the remains.
An investigation was launched and by February, a witness came forward and told authorities that Saleski admitted to kidnapping the victim, strangling him, and setting fire to him. He also allegedly told the witness that he’d received $2,000 for those actions and was expecting to receive $10,000 more for it.
Police then discovered Saleski communicated with the Ocampos via cell phone multiple times. The relatives were interviewed and then arrested.
The youngest defendant admitted to kidnapping the boy, putting him into the van, and binding him with duct tape, while Reynaldo Ocampo admitted to being present when the victim was pulled into the van and during the time he was in the garage where he was held waiting for the ransom moneyprosecutor. A police report stated that Reynaldo Ocampo participating in the kidnapping and in the murder of the victim.
Alejandro Ocampo has one pending unlawful use of a weapon charge and one violation of bail bond, the prosecutor said. Reynaldo Ocampo was given 24 months probation for an aggravated DUI conviction and has a 2010 conviction for a battery, for which he received conditional discharge. Reynaldo Ocampo also received boot camp for a residential burglary.
Saleski has four prior felony convictions – for an attempted burglary, two burglaries, and one unlawful use of a weapon charge, the prosecutor said. Saleski received 18 months for the attempted burglary, and a three year IDOC sentence for each burglary conviction that would run concurrent with each other. He was sentenced to two years in IDOC for the uuw that was also to be concurrent with the two burglaries,

Man charged in 2 West Side iPhone robberies

A 20-year-old Logan Square man was arrested Tuesday night after he robbed two people of their iPhones at gunpoint.
Semajay Hyles, of the 1700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, was charged with two felony counts of armed robbery with a firearm.
Officers from the Near West District robbery mission team responded to a call of a man who had just been robbed of his wallet and iPhone at gunpoint in the 1100 block of North Wood Street at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood.
The officers – trained in activating the tracking application on stolen or misplaced iPhones – immediately tracked the victim’s phone to the West Humboldt Park neighborhood where they saw a man matching the description of the armed robber.
When officers stopped the man at Chicago Avenue and Pulaski Road and patted him down, they found a .22-caliber handgun hidden in his pants.
The officers found the iPhone from the Wood Street robbery and also found another iPhone taken in an earlier armed robbery. That crime occurred about 8:15 p.m. near Grand Avenue and Ada Street in the West Town neighborhood.
The victims in both robberies identified Hyles as the robber

Man accused of hate crime after threatening mail carrier

A Northwest Side man is accused of calling a mail carrier a racial slur and ordering his dog to attack him outside a Laundromat.
Cosovic Ahmmed, 27, of the 5000 block of North Keeler Avenue, is charged with felony hate crime, felony stalking and misdemeanor aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was also cited for not having a dog license.
Ahmmed was arrested around noon Tuesday in the 5000 block of North Pulaski Road after officers responded to a call of a man threatening a mail carrier with a dog. The officers saw Ahmmed standing outside with the mail carrier, who told the police he was threatening him.
The carrier told police he was trying to deliver mail to a Laundromat at the Pulaski address when he saw Ahmmed inside the business with his dog. Ahmmed came out and “shoved the victim’s mail cart’’.
The carrier told him the cart was government property and not to touch it, but Ahmmed used a racial slur for an African-American and told the dog to “sic him’’ .
Ahmmed denied the allegations and assured police he was “not going to do anything’’ .
But after officers left, he confronted the carrier -- again using the racial slur--and said he hated African-Americans and told his dog to attack the carrier. A witness called 911.

Woman found guilty in '08 shooting death of police officer

A jury convict a woman with a reported history of mental illness in his 2008 slaying.
Jurors deliberated for about five hours before finding Robin Johnson, 50, guilty of first-degree murder. That carries an automatic life sentence, along with aggravated discharge of a firearm toward another police officer.
Prosecutors had called for a quick conviction while arguing that Johnson became angry and aggressive after another woman got in her way on a CTA bus, then snatched a gun from Francis and shot him once in the head, killing him instantly.
Johnson then opened fire on responding officers and went on to shoot Francis two more times as he lay motionless on the ground, about a block from what was then the Belmont District station

23-year-old man shot dead in Logan Square

A  23-year-old man was shot to death about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Logan Square neighborhood, one of two gunshot victims discovered overnight in the city.
The 23-year-old was found bleeding from a chest wound near the intersection of Wrightwood and Sawyer avenues on the Northwest Side. Paramedics took him to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and he was pronounced dead there just after 5 a.m.

57-year-old man shot in Chatham

In the Chatham neighborhood just before midnight, a 57-year-old man was shot in the finger. He told police he heard gunfire that may have come from a vehicle, though he couldn't describe the vehicle, and realized he had been shot. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition. 

52-year-old man shot in West Town

At about 9:35 p.m., a 52-year-old man was shot in the 1700 block of West Lake Street.
The man's condition was stabilized after the shooting, which happened in the West Town neighborhood. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County for a leg wound.

21-year-old man shot in Rosemoor

At about 7:15 p.m., someone shot a 21-year-old man in the the elbow in the 10200 block of South Eberhart Avenue, in the Rosemoor neighborhood.

Murder suspect thought 14-year-old would steal rifle

A 22-year-old man used a high-powered rifle to kill a teenage boy last month after convincing himself the 14-year-old and another teen wanted to steal his gun.
Tramell McGraw-Anderson is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Tommy McNeal, 14, who was fatally shot outside a home in the South Side's Park Manor neighborhood about 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 20.
Authorities believe McGraw-Anderson brought an AR-15 high-powered rifle in a duffel bag to the home in the 6900 block of South Vernon Avenue. Several people were on the home's front porch, including McNeal.
McGraw-Anderson showed the weapon to several people and shortly afterward became "paranoid" that McNeal and a 16-year-old would steal it.
Prosecutors say he shot down a gangway of the home on Vernon at McNeal, who was struck multiple times and died on the scene.

Charges filed in killing near Obama's home

A 20-year-old man was charged with killing a 15-year-old boy blocks from President Barack Obama's Hyde Park home earlier this year. 
Authorities charged Kevin Culverson, of the 700 block of East 50th Place, with first-degree murder. Culverson is due in court Wednesday.
Police said he shot 15-year-old Cornelius German in the back about 9:40 p.m. in the 5000 block of South Evans Street on April 22 about 9;40 p.m. German died after midnight.

Man found shot to death inside Austin neighborhood apartment

A man in his 40s or early 50s was found shot to death inside his Austin-neighborhood apartment Monday night. The man's landlord discovered him about 9:45 p.m. in the apartment, in the 5300 block of West Adams Street.
Police said the man suffered gunshot wounds to his head and side, and that he may have been shot a few days ago.  
The man's body was in the early stages of decomposition and blood at the scene had dried

4 Chicago men arrested after trying to hijack off-duty cop's car

Four men were arrested overnight Sunday after they tried to hijack a car belonging to an off-duty police officer.
Marcus Johnson, 36, of the 4100 block of South Prairie Avenue; Deonta Brown, 21, of the 7400 block of South Yates Boulevard; Michael Jackson, 20, of the 2400 block of East 74th Street; and Rashee Herron, 21, of the 7400 block of South Phillips Street, were brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Monday afternoon and ordered held on $450,000 bond in the incident.
The off-duty officer told the officers who arrested the men that he was driving in the alley on Yates Boulevard when they surrounded his car and Herron pulled out an object that appeared to be a firearm.
"Get up out of this shit, this ain't no joke," Herron allegedly said to the driver. The driver replied that he was a police officer, and showed his assailants his own firearm.
One of the alleged offenders, apparently recognizing the man, said, "Oh shit, he is the police, he stays right up the street," according to the police report. The four men fled down the alley while the off-duty officer called 911. They were arrested just after midnight Monday morning.

37-year-old man shot in South Shore

At about 4 p.m., a 37-year-old man was shot in the 7600 block of South Shore Drive.
The man was taken in serious-to-critical condition from the South Shore neighborhood to Northwestern Memorial Hospital

55-year-old shot in Hyde Park

On the South Side, a 55-year-old man was critically hurt in a shooting in the East Hyde Park neighborhood.
Someone who had been involved in an earlier altercation with the 55-year-old walked up to the man about 8:55 p.m., as he stood on the sidewalk in the 5400 block of South Cornell Avenue.
The shooter pulled out a handgun and opened fire, hitting the man in the cheek, neck, and chest.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

18-year-old woman shot in Austin

At about 9:15 p.m., an 18-year-old woman was shot in the leg and hand.
The shooting happened in the 5800 block of West Superior Street, in the South Austin neighborhood.
The woman was talking with other people on the sidewalk when two male assailants approached and opened fire. The woman was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where her condition was stabilized

33-year-old man shot dead in Lawndale

Around 3 p.m., a 33-year-old man was found shot in a vehicle in the 3300 block of West 16th Street in the Lawndale neighborhood.
The man was identified as Steven Noble, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:16 p.m.

Death of woman found in car trunk ruled a homicide

A Wisconsin woman found dead in the trunk of a car near the Greyhound station in the South Loop suffered trauma to her neck, and her death has been classified a homicide.
Erin Ziemendorf, 30 of West Allis, died of blunt neck trauma caused by an assault.
Police found Ziemendorf's body around 6:25 p.m. Sunday at 630 W. Harrison Street after her boyfriend contacted police in Kenosha and said he had killed his girlfriend.
Officers tracked down the car, based on information provided by the boyfriend, but didn't see anyone in it, the sources said. They opened the trunk and found the woman in the fetal position and in a duffel bag

Man killed in early morning shooting in Englewood

A 54-year-old man was gunned down in Englewood this morning.
The Englewood shooting happened about 5:25 a.m. in the 1200 block of West 72nd Place.
The man was shot several times and died on the scene. He was pronounced dead at 5:35 a.m.

Man killed in traffic crash

At about 6 a.m., a 31-year-old man died after his vehicle crashed on the Southwest Side.
The wreck happened at 6 a.m. in the 6700 block of South Cicero Avenue. The victim was a male and, according to preliminary reports, the car ran into a pole.
The man was identified as Rene Vasquez of the 2900 block of West 38th Place

Man killed in traffic crash

Eugenio Moyola, 39, of the 3300 block of South Ashland Avenue was killed after he was traveling northbound on Ashland when his vehicle hit a light pole.
The accident happened at 3:10 a.m. on the 1300 block of South Ashland, according to police. The man was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger, Jr Hospital of Cook County at 3:34 a.m.

17-year-old boy shot dead in Albany Park

A 17-year-old boy was dead on this scene this morning gunned down in what police said was a gang-related incident on the Northwest Side.
The 17-year-old was standing on a sidewalk at 1:20 a.m. in the 3700 block of West Lawrence Avenue when two males on foot confronted him and shot him in the upper back. The boy was dead on the scene and the attackers fled.
Dante Mondragon, of the 4700 block of North Central Park Avenue, was killed early Sunday in the 3700 block of West

A  man was fatally shot in the city's Gresham neighborhood.
That shooting happened about 6:20 p.m. Saturday on the 600 block of West 89th Street.
Fredrick Ollie, of the 8900 block of South Union Avenue, was pronounced dead at 7:11 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn

Second victim dies almost 2 weeks after being shot on South Side

A second victim of a shooting that happened about two weeks ago in the city's East Chatham neighborhood has died from his injuries.
Robert Murphy III, 30, was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Stroger Hospital.
Murphy and another man, Anthony Williamson, 49, were seated in a vehicle when they got into an argument with a third man
About 9 a.m. that day, the two pulled off, but a man, later identified as Terry Burnett of Harvey, walked up to the car near the intersection of 82nd Street and Maryland Avenue and fired several times.
After the shooting, the car struck three other vehicles and came to rest near 82nd Street and Drexel Boulevard. Williamson stumbled from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lewis was taken in critical condition in an "incapacitated state". He died this morning.
Burnett fled the scene with a gun in his hand, and was later identified by witnesses in a photo line-up in Harvey on Oct. 22.
Burnett, 35, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and discharge of a fire arm

A man was shot multiple times and seriously injured this afternoon on the South Side in the city's Woodlawn neighborhood.
The shooting happened about 4:18 p.m. on the 6100 block of South Kimbark Avenue.
The man, 20, was reportedly shot several times in his leg. He was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital

On city's Far South Side about 7:15 p.m. on the 13100 block of South Langley Avenue, a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg and reportedly in good condition

33-year-old man shot during robbery in Austin

In  a shooting in the Austin neighborhood on the city's West Side, a 33-year-old man was shot during a robbery about 12:05 a.m.
The victim was on a sidewalk when he was confronted by three attackers who pulled a handgun and robbed the man of cash before they shot him in the mouth in the 5500 block of West Huron Street.
The victim’s brother took him to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park but he was transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where his condition had stabilized

24-year-old man shot in West Pullman

In  the West Pullman neighborhood at 11:30 p.m. a 24-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the forearm in the 11500 block of South Racine Avenue. The victim declined to be taken to a hospital after the Far South Side shooting

15-year-old boy shot in Logan Square

At 10 p.m. in the Logan Square neighborhood a 15-year-old boy was walking in an alley in the 3200 block of West Wabansia Avenue when several males shouted gang slogans at him before firing shots, hitting the boy in the left leg. He was taken to Stroger where his condition had stabilized, and the shooting is gang related

24-year-old man shot in Park Manor

A  24-year-old man was shot Saturday night in the Park Manor neighborhood on the city's South Side. Someone shot the man in the buttocks in the 400 block of East 73^rd Street about 9:30 p.m.

Boy facing felony charges after mugging

A 17-year-old boy is facing felony robbery charges this morning after police said he knocked a 58-year-old woman down and stole her purse Saturday night in the Loop.
The South Side boy was on his way to catch the Megabus to take him to his father’s Wisconsin home when he knocked the 58-year-old victim over and snatched her purse about 10:15 p.m. at Adams Street and Wabash Avenue.
The boy fled but police apprehended him about a block away after he’d thrown the purse into a Dumpster and took the money from it.
The woman identified the boy and he was placed under arrest. The victim, who was on her way home from work at the time, was not injured and she received her belongings back.

8th man charged in West Side kidnapping, sex assault

An eighth person has been charged in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault of three teenage girls last weekend on the West Side.
Bail was set at $500,000 this morning for Ramel Stevens, 20, of the 12800 block of S. 58th Court in Cicero. He was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and kidnapping.
Stevens is accused of being part of a group who attacked two 16-year-old girls and a 15-year-old

17-year-old boy shot in Rogers Park

A  teenager riding a bike was injured when someone jumped out of a car in the Uptown neighborhood near Harry S. Truman College and shot him.
Police were called to the scene in the 1100 block of West Wilson Avenue about 7:15 p.m. and found a 17-year-old boy shot in the left knee. The victim was taken to advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was in good condition.
The teen was riding his bike west on Wilson Avenue when a vehicle pulled up and someone got out and started shooting at him. After the shooting, the attacker fled on foot

17-year-old boy and his 53-year-old man shot in Galewood

A 17-year-old boy and his 53-year-old uncle were shot in the Galewood neighborhood on the Northwest Side this morning.
About 3:10 a.m., someone firing a gun chased the 17-year-old into a backyard in the 2100 block of North Mulligan Avenue.
A bullet struck the teen in the lower back, critically injuring him. Another traveled through a door or a window and hit the boy's 53-year-old uncle, who was in his bed
The uncle was struck in the leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. His nephew was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in critical condition.

18-year-old woman shot in Heart of Chicago

At about 3:50 a.m., an 18-year-old woman was shot in the Near West Side's Heart of Chicago neighborhood . The woman was shot in the leg and taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she was listed in good condition.

16-year-old boy shot in Englewood

About 9:15 p.m. Friday night, a shooter walked up to a 16-year-old boy and opened fire in the 6600 block of South Bell Avenue on the South Side. The boy was struck in the buttocks and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

4th teen charged in assault that was posted on Facebook

A fourth teenager has been charged with the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl, an attack that was recorded and posted on Facebook.
Dyquier Garrett, 16, is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault in the December 2012 attack at the home of another teen charged in the case, Scandale Fritz. He was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
 Kenneth Brown, and Justin Applewhite, all now 16, were arrested in May and indicted on sex assault charges in July and are each being held on $900,000 bail.
The assaults took place around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 in Fritz's home in the 400 block of West 60th Place in the Englewood neighborhood. The three boys charged in May assaulted the girl first, and Garrett arrived later and also assaulted her.
The girl had gone to Fritz's house to talk to him. Brown had a gun and the girl twice refused to have sex with the boys before they forced her into in the basement and sexually assaulted her. Fritz recorded the attacks, including Brown holding a gun and the boys yelling out references to the assaults and their gang.
After the assaults, Garrett came over to the house and watched the video with Fritz and Applewhite, after which Fritz told Garrett the girl, then 12 years old, would have sex with him also. Garrett went into the basement with the girl alone and forced her to have sex.
A day after the assaults, the girl told a relative about the attacks and a police report was filed and the girl was treated and examined at a hospital. On Dec. 17, the video was posted on Brown's Facebook page, and then on Fritz's and Applewhite's Facebook pages.
Fritz admitted to investigators he made the recording.
Charges against Garrett were delayed because prosecutors were awaiting the results of lab tests conducted by the Illinois State Police crime lab

7 charged in kidnapping, assault of 3 teen girls on West Side

Bail was set today at $500,000 each for two of seven suspects accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting three teenage girls last weekend in the Austin neighborhood.
Cook County Criminal Court Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil set bail today for Vanburen Robinson, 18, of the 600 block of South 12th Avenue in Maywood, and Maurice Johnson, of the 800 block of North Massasoit Avenue in Chicago.
Robinson and Johnson were charged with three counts each of aggravated criminal sexual assault and kidnapping.
Five others – Fitzpatrick Durham, 18, Kelvin Pryor, 17, Sadarius Price, 17, Joshua Grayer, 18, and Denzel Clay, 19--have already been charged in the case and there are other “unapprehended co-defendants” who are sought..
The suspects are accused of being part of a group who attacked two 16-year-old girls and a 15-year-old, prosecutors said. One of the older girls and the 15-year-old are sisters.
The girls were walking in the 700 block of North Parkside Avenue about 9:45 p.m. Saturday when a 1999 Chevrolet van driven by Durham, and seven or eight other males including Johnson and Robinson approached.
As the van parked outside of a liquor store, Pryor and another suspect exited and started to talk to the girls. Later, the victims agreed to get into the van and left with them. The attackers had the girls sit on their laps and then gave the two 16-year-old victims alcohol and marijuana.
The 15-year-old began screaming and pounding on the walls of the van as tears streamed down her 16-year-old sister’s face as the attackers sexually assaulted them.
Angered at her screams, Robinson held the 15-year-old down while another suspect punched her in the face until she became quiet. Still restrained, she was sexually assaulted and then kicked out of the van because she continued yelling. As she fell out, she managed to pull her 16-year-old sister out with her, even though the attackers tried yanking them back inside.
The second 16-year-old remained in the van as the sisters ran, knocked on doors and screamed for help.
The suspects drove to Durham’s home. The girl was unconscious so Johnson and Price picked her up and carried her into Durham’s home where Price then sexually assaulted her.
Three witnesses who happened to be driving in the area called police after seeing the commotion and the sisters as they escaped from the van.
The witnesses jotted down the van's license plate and police used that information to find its owners home, where Durham, Pryor, Price, and Grayer were arrested. Robinson and Jones we also hiding in the home but were not found by police.
The 16-year-old was unconscious and lying partially clothed in a pool of vomit in the basement. The three victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
Police learned that all the sexual acts were recorded on a cell phone and the victims identified Johnson and Robinson in both a photo array and a physical lineup,

Police fatally shoot woman after she refuses to drop knife

A woman whose brother called 911 to report she was "tearing the house up" was shot and killed by police when she refused to drop a knife and advanced on a police officer.
Angelique Styles, 60, was shot around 6:40 p.m. in the home she shared with her brother in the 10900 block of South Eberhart Avenue
Her brother told police she was "possibly under the influence of narcotics" and had picked up a knife. When police entered the home, the woman still had the knife and would not drop it, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.
The woman then started approaching an officer with the knife and police shot her, Camden said.
The shooting was just blocks from where officers shot a man who stabbed a police sergeant Tuesday night. The sergeant received more than 50 stitches to his face, Camden said.

2 fetuses found in jars in Little Village neighborhood- Santeria in full bloom

Two fetuses were found in jars on the steps of an apartment building in the Little Village neighborhood.
The fetuses were human and "not viable," according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Authorities haven't been able to determine if they might have been medical specimens.
A man walking home Wednesday morning in the 2500 block of South Harding Avenue found the jars inside a plastic bag, authorities said. Each jar was filled with a clear liquid.
One jar with a red lid also had three plastic roses inside, and the other, with a yellow lid, had two plastic roses inside.
The man who found the jars knocked on the door where he found the jars after calling police and a woman inside said she knew nothing about them

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the Rogers Park neighborhood this evening, authorities said.
The boy was shot in both legs in the 6500 block of North Bosworth Avenue about 7:50 p.m.
Someone approached the boy on foot and shot him

Guilty verdict in Bucktown bat-beating trial

A Cook County jury convicted Heriberto Viramontes today in connection with a baseball bat beating in which a Northern Ireland exchange student suffered severe head injuries and her friend was hurt as well.
The jury deliberated about 3 ½ hours before convicting Viramontes on all 10 counts of attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated battery in the April 23, 2010, beatings of Natasha McShane and Stacy Jurich.
About two hours into their deliberations, jurors had asked for transcripts of the recordings of Heriberto Viramontes’ calls from Cook County Jail following his arrest, as well as a photo of his neck tattoo.
Prosecutors said the tattoo was visible in video from a gas station where Viramontes allegedly used one of the victims' credit cards to pump gas for motorists in exchange for cash.
During closing arguments earlier today, Assistant State’s Attorney John Maher called Viramontes “every parent’s nightmare” and said "he took everything" from the victims.
“He took Natasha McShane’s future ….He burdened them (the McShane family) with the life task of caring for their daughter. He took serenity and sleep from Stacy Jurich along with her peripheral vision and part of her scalp.”
At one point Maher walked about the courtroom with the bat that prosecutors believe was used in the beating, telling jurors, “Behold Heriberto Viramontes, every parent’s nightmare.”
Maher called damning the audio recordings in which Viramontes admitted on calls from Cook County Jail that he attacked the two women.
"They bury that guy right there " he said, his voice rising. "The trial ended the moment those were published. "
Viramontes’ attorney, Chandra Smith, said the attack was a tragedy but her client was innocent.
"We don't know who did this, but we know it was not Mr. Viramontes,” she told jurors.
Smith said Viramontes’ co-defendant, Marcy Cruz, who testified against him, cannot be trusted.
She cautioned jurors about the jail recordings, saying only  a portion of the calls were played and that they were taken out of context. But if jurors believed the prosecution’s version of the recordings, she said the calls show he did not have the intent to kill that is needed to prove attempted first-degree murder.
The attack took place in the early hours of April 23, 2010, in the 1800 block of North Damen Avenue as the McShane and Jurich walked home from celebrating an internship McShane had just landed.
Jurich, who was in the courtroom for the closing arguments, was able to return to work but testified during the trial that she still has severe headaches and reduced vision.

Arrest in "massage service" attack, robbery at Gold Coast hotel

A West Englewood resident was arrested Tuesday morning at his home and charged with robbing a man in his luxury Gold Coast hotel room last summer after the man called a massage service.
Jherrell McMahan, 25, of the 6600 block of South Bishop Street, was brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Thursday afternoon and ordered held on $150,000 bond.
The 70-year-old robbery victim was staying at the Whitehall Hotel, 105 E. Delaware Place, on Aug. 23 when he returned to his hotel room, called for a massage service and unlocked the door, prosecutors said. Instead of a masseur, McMahan came into the room with an unnamed co-offender and knocked the hotel guest to the ground.
McMahan and the second attacker beat the man, stole his iPad and ripped his pockets open to retrieve his wallet, credit cards and cash. They also threatened to hit him with a bottle of whiskey and a bike pump that were both in the hotel room before they fled in a getaway vehicle that was registered in McMahan's mother's name.
McMahan has previous misdemeanor convictions for theft and prostitution, according to court records.

Man charged with infant son's death- 2012 Chicago Violence Scoreboard update

A  Rogers Park man charged with his infant son's death had dropped him on the floor, shook him, then covered his nose and mouth until he died.
Rahsaan Condiff, 25, was charged with murder this week after a yearlong investigation into the death of his 4-month-old son Clayton and ordered held without bail in a Cook County Bond Court hearing today.
The baby's twin sister was removed from the home in the 7500 block of North Seeley Avenue shortly after the death, and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says it continues to investigate allegations of abuse and neglect against both the father and the mother. The mother has not been charged with any crime
The baby boy was found unresponsive in the couple's home on Sept. 2 of last year.
Condiff and the mother told police they had fed Clayton about 8 a.m. and went to their bedroom an hour later and slept until 12:45 p.m. when they found Clayton “blue in color’’ in his sleeper chair.
Condiff told police Clayton seemed to have turned himself on his side and his mouth was partially covered with blankets, possibly obstructing his airway.
But an autopsy found Clayton had suffered several injuries and fractures to the spine, ribs, head and thigh bone. Clayton's twin sister was removed from the home and placed in the care of a relative, police said.
During the investigation, authorities said they learned Condiff had beaten and suffocated his baby son after the infant's crying woke him up.
When the boy's mother asked Condiff to feed the babies who were in their sleepers, Condiff, who had gone out the night before drinking, picked Clayton up and dropped him to the ground, facing up, hitting the victim's head on the floor, according to Kent.

When the victim continued crying, Condiff then "yanked the victim's head, leg and body up from the floor, grabbed him with both hands and shook him".
Condiff then "swadddled the victim with a blanket tightly, covering the victim's nose and mouth while the victim had a pacifier in his mouth, restricting his breathing. Condiff went back into the bedroom as the mother went into the bathroom but moments later, Condiff came rushing into the bathroom carrying Clayton, who had turned blue and was not breathing.
Clatyon was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston where he was pronounced dead at 1:56 p.m. that day.
An autopsy later found that Clayton suffered multiple fractures at different stages of healing, according to Kent. Some of the injuries included several rib fractures, spine fractures, arm fractures, a femur fracture, and hemorrhaging to the scalp.
Condiff admitted to suffocating, squeezing, shaking and grabbing Clayton forcefully by the arms on previous occasions.

Second man charged in fatal robbery in Marquette Park

A second person has been charged in the death of a Marquette Park man who was shot after he chased two robbers from his home and continued following them in his car, striking one of them.
Damien Thomas, 21, of the 2300 block of West 65th Street, was charged with murder and home invasion.
Thomas and Dorvell D. Gogins, 23, broke into the home of Jeremiah Brown, 27, in the 6300 block of South Kedzie Avenue on July 11.
The two fled and Brown got into his car and followed, striking Gogins a few houses down on the block. At some point during the confrontation, Gogins shot Brown in the chest.
Brown died next to his car. Responding officers found Gogins, both his legs broken, nearby. A gun was recovered.

Year later, shooting at gang funeral claims second victim - 2012 Chicago Violence Scoreboard updated

 A shooting at a gang funeral on the South Side last year has claimed a second victim.
Deonte Ousley, 27, died Wednesday, almost a year after he and another man were shot outside St. Columbanus Church, where a funeral was being held for a gang member killed a week earlier

The second person shot, Sherman Miller, 21, died not long after the shooting. Ousley, of the 5900 block of South Damen Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood, was pronounced dead about 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Ousley and Miller had been attending the funeral of James Holman, 32, when they were shot on Nov. 26 at the church in the Park Manor neighborhood. All three were identified by police as Gangster Disciples.

Man charged with shooting 2, 1 fatally, in East Chatham

Harvey man was charged with fatally shooting one man and injuring another as the victims sat in a vehicle in the East Chatham neighborhood earlier this month.
Terry Burnett, 35, of the 14600 block of South Jerfferson in the south suburb, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and discharge of a fire arm.
He is charged with the Oct. 14 killing of Anthony Williamson, 49, of the 8700 block of South Ashland Avenue. In addition, he is charged with shooting a 30-year-old man who was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition.
The shooting happened at about 9:00 a.m. on the 800 block of East 82nd Street as the two victims were seated in a vehicle and got into an argument with Burnett.
After the argument, Burnett shot the two men. Williamson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aldermen mixed on Emanuel cigarette tax hike- some kind of get it and some are full of shit

Also raising questions about the wisdom of the cigarette tax, which opponents say will dampen retail sales and result in the illegal sale of loose cigarettes, was Ald. Carrie Austin, 34th, the City Council Budget Committee chairman.

"The cigarette tax has the benefit of leading to a healthier Chicago,”  Ald. Joe Moore, 49th, said. “It results in a healthier populace: less people are smoking, and less people need health care. So it’s a win-win for everybody.”
If people stop smoking then how does the city collect $10 million dollars from the cigarette tax increase Ald. Genius Joe Moore?

Police shoot man dead after sergeant stabbed in face

Chicago police officers shot and killed a man after he stabbed a sergeant in the face in the Rosemoor neighborhood.
The sergeant, 46, suffered a puncture wound above the temple and lacerations to face. He was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Police said his wounds were not life-threatening.
The three officers forced their way into the home after hearing a woman scream and the sergeant, who was first to enter, was stabbed several times in the face. The other officers pulled the sergeant back outside and the suspect barricaded himself in the home.
After calling for an ambulance, the two officers re-entered the home and found the suspect downstairs near a furnace. Camden said the man charged at them with the knife and the officers shot him. He was dead at the scene.
The woman suffered puncture wounds to her leg and was treated at Roseland Hospital. Her son, 40, was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.
A statement from Chicago police said the man was wielding two knives and refused commands to drop them before he lunged toward the officers.
The statement identified the sergeant as a 19-year veteran assigned to the Calumet Police District on the Far South Side.  Police and Camden said the officers and the sergeant were tactical officers in plainclothes.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the foot Tuesday night in the Fuller Park neighborhood on the South Side.  The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. in the 4300 block of South Wentworth Avenue. 
He walked into Provident Hospital of Cook County with the wound.

41-year-old man shot in South Chicago

About 1:25 a.m., someone in a gray sedan opened fire in the 8900 block of South Escanaba Avenue.
A 41-year-old man sitting in a parked vehicle was struck in the right side and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition

25-year-old man shot in Park Manor

Someone in a sedan fired shots in the 7500 block of South Michigan Avenue, striking a 25-year-old man standing nearby.
The man was hit twice in the abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

 

29 arrested after brawl at Far South Side high school

Twenty-nine students were arrested this morning following a disturbance at Percy L. Julian High School on the Far South Side in the city's Washington Heights neighborhood.
Shortly before 10 a.m., police were called out to a disturbance at the school located at 10330 S. Elizabeth St.
Police arrived at the school and got the brawl under control, but three female students and 26 male students were arrested.
Chicago Public Schools issued the following statement after the disturbance:
“Today’s incident at Julian High School was quickly resolved thanks to swift action taken on the part of Julian High School staff, CPD and CPS, and all classes and activities resumed as normal. The education and safety of our students are our top priorities, and CEO Byrd-Bennett has provided Julian with additional support and security staff today and throughout the week to ensure that the learning environment for our students and staff remains a safe one.”
All 29 students were charged as juveniles with mob-action and released to the custody of their guardians,

Group tried to kidnap boy on West Side

Police have issued an alert after a group of people riding in a car and a van tried to lure a 10-year-old boy with candy in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.
The boy was walking his dog near Ogden and Drake avenues around 9 a.m. Sunday when a man pulled up in a red two-door car with two other passengers inside.
The man told the boy to get in the car. Soon afterward, another man called out to the boy from a blue van and promised him candy if he got inside. The van had five other males inside.
The boy refused and ran home.
The man who called out to the boy from the red car was described as a black man in his 20s, with short black twists in his hair and one gold earring. Police said he had brown eyes and a medium complexion.
The man who called out from the blue van was described as a white man with a fair complexion between the ages of 20 to 30. He was bald and was wearing a yellow sweater with a red shirt underneath, light brown shorts and red and white Michael Jordan gym shoes. He appeared to have a knife in one of his gym shoes.
The passengers of the van where all black males and one of them had red markings on his face, possibly a tattoo.
The red care was a newer model with chrome rims that had spinners. The van had the word "dish" faintly visible on the side under a coat of blue paint

Girl, 14, sexually assaulted behind abandoned building on South Side

Police issued a community alert this afternoon warning about a man who dragged a 14-year-old girl behind an abandoned and sexually assaulted her in the city's Gresham neighborhood.
About 8 a.m. Monday, the girl was walking to a bus stop near the 8700 block of South Halsted Street when she was approached my a man who asked for change. When she said she didn't have any change to spare, he dragged her behind an abandoned building where she was sexually assaulted.
The man fled the scene, and the girl went to school where she told school officials what happened.
The man was described as black with a dark complexion and about 19-years-old. He is about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a husky build. His fingernails were excessively bitten down to the skin.
The attacker was wearing a black skull cap and a black lower half ski mask, and a red jacket with blue and white stripes down the sleeves. He also was wearing dark blue True Religion jeans and white Air Force One gym shoes

Man held without bail in West Pullman shooting over cell phone

West Pullman man has been charged with attempted murder after he shot a man over a dispute involving a cell phone.
Letroy Fields, 34, is accused of shooting a 30-year-old man on a front porch in the 11600 block of South Harvard Avenue at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
Fields was ordered held without bail after he appeared in court this afternoon.
The shooting happened after a party as the two argued over a phone.  The victim remained in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Officials said Fields and the victim had a similar phone and that Fields may have thought the victim took his phone.
Authorities said Fields, of the 12000 block of South Wentworth Avenue, and the victim may have known each other.
When Fields was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, he was treated for a graze wound to the ankle, police said. It was not clear whether the wound was self-inflicted.
According to a police report, Fields told police that he had been shot but when police noticed an ulceration on his leg and took him to a local hospital he refused medical treatment.

Assault, disorderly conduct at Portage Park haunted house as haunted hoes and Joes go wild

Northwest Side haunted house had some scares it didn't plan for this weekend when several people were arrested for disorderly conduct, and one for punching an off-duty police officer in the face, county prosecutors said.
Two people charged with crimes after being arrested at the "Catacombs," a haunted house at Saint Pascal in Portage Park.
Noelle Siewarine, 19, was charged with aggravated battery, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest after she allegedly spit on a police officer's face while he was arresting her boyfriend for disorderly conduct on Sunday afternoon. Siewarine was shouting "[bleep] you police," at officers and other haunted house patrons while standing in line and making obscene gestures.
Siewarine was released on a $10,000 I-bond with electronic home monitoring by Judge Adam D. Bourgeois Jr., who said, "You don't get to go around spitting in the face of police officers and get to just walk out of jail."
One day earlier, Carlos Rivera, 25, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery to a police officer after he allegedly punched an off-duty officer working security at the haunted house in the face.
Rivera, of the 3000 block of North Karlov Avenue, was with his wife and children when the victim, in his capacity as security guard, tried to escort the wife off the premise for disorderly conduct. Prosecutors said the wife appeared to be intoxicated and was behaving disruptively.
Rivera punched the man in the face once, according to court records, and then several times again after the man identified himself as an off-duty officer. The 28-year-old man was treated for a fractured skull and other injuries at the Resurrection North Hospital.

Instagramming robber caught by police: Prosecutors

A Gresham man was arrested Saturday afternoon and charged with armed robbery after police officers identified him as the man accused of robbing a clothing maker he met on Instagram.
Devontae Watkins, 21, of the 1200 block of West 81st Street, allegedly made a plan with a clothing designer from Calumet City to buy some of her products after he saw them posted on Instagram. He contacted the woman through his Instagram account and they agreed to meet on Sept. 11.
That day, the woman drove to meet Watkins, who climbed into the car to look at a bag she was carrying full of pants, belts, and baseball caps, among other items. Then Watkins brandished a knife with a four-inch blade and demanded the woman give him all of the clothing items while an unknown co-offender walked toward her car holding a gun.
Watkins was identified by police after the woman pointed them to a photo of him she found on his Instagram account.

Man killed in East Chatham shootout

A 23-year-old man was killed in a shootout this afternoon in the East Chatham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.
The victim, whose identity was not being released pending family notification, was shot in the back during an exchange of gunfire with at least one other gunman.
The shooting happened about 3:15 p.m. in the 8300 block of South Ellis Avenue. The victim was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was later pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m.

2 arrested after brawl at Chuck E. Cheese's in Lincoln Park

A man and woman have been arrested after a brawl broke out among people waiting to claim prizes at a Chuck E. Cheese's in the Lincoln Park community, injuring three people.
The fight occurred around 7:10 p.m. Sunday at the restaurant in the 1800 block of West Fullerton Avenue in the Lathrop Homes neighborhood
Police received a report of a large group of people fighting inside, Estrada said. "The fight started over a disagreement of people waiting in line for prizes" .
Three adults suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention.
Shambreya Barfield, 21, of the 3800 block of North Broadway was charged with one count of misdemeanor battery.
Trevell Washington, 21, of the 2900 block of West Monroe Drive was charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery.

Chicago man held without bail in infant daughter's beating

A Chicago man was ordered held without bail Sunday in connection to allegations that he inflicted a number of severe injuries on his 8-week-old daughter.
Dmel R. Hughes, 25, of the 1800 block of North Karlov Avenue in Hermosa, faces felony aggravated battery charges in connection to the beatings took place between Sept. 1 and Thursday.
Hughes’ daughter was admitted to Lurie Children’s Hospital on Thursday with a litany of injuries.
The infant had a skull fracture, rib fractures, other head injuries, a broken collarbone and a broken femur, as well as a burn on her tongue. She was also suffering from seizures and lack of oxygen to the brain.
Hughes, who court records state is a UPS laborer, admitted the infant is his daughter and that he “treated her violently” on several occasions.
Hughes admitted to shaking the infant and throwing her roughly head-first onto a bed, where her head struck a TV remote. He also squeezed her body so hard that she passed out.
Hughes was arrested Friday in the 1800 block of South Pulaski Road in Lawndalerecords.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services began an investigation into Hughes and the infant’s mother on Friday.
DCFS is investigating abuse allegations against the parents.
The infant’s two siblings have been placed with relatives as part of DCFS-monitored supervision.
The department has had no prior reports regarding the family

Chicago Gangs and Emanuel wants 75 cents a pack cigarette tax increase

Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to propose increasing the city cigarette tax by 75 cents to help plug a budget gap and provide more free vision care for low-income Chicago Public Schools students, a City Hall source said Saturday.
The increase would leave Chicago with the nation’s highest total cigarette taxes. The administration expects to collect an additional $10 million. The city gangs can be expect to collected  about $1 million dollars through the sale of their loosies  and cigarette packs brought in from Indiana.
The source failed to mention that the increase in the price of a pack of cigarettes plays right into the hands of Chicago's gangs. The gangs who control the loose cigarette sales. The gang members you'll see calling to you "loosies" at the CTA stations, bus stops and gas stations. At a dollar a cigarette we're sure the gangs pull in big money. Again it's the DEMOCRAT- GANG connect and Chicago's news media is too corrupt or stupid to recognize it.

14-year-old boy shot in South Shore

At about 1:30 p.m. in the South Side's South Shore neighborhood, someone shot a 14-year-old boy in the arm as he stood on the sidewalk in the 2100 block of East 68th Place.
The boy was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He has since been released.

 16-year-old boy shot in Humboldt Park

A 16-year-old boy was shot about 4 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, in the West Side's Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Police said the boy was shot in the forearm and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

2 men shot in West Pullman

A 30-year-old man was critically hurt when someone opened fire during a dispute involving a cell phone early this morning in the Far South Side's West Pullman neighborhood.
About 1:30 a.m., someone opened fire on a porch in the 11600 block of South Harvard Avenue, striking the man multiple times.
A witness told police at the scene he heard about seven or eight shots.
Shortly after the shooting, which happened on the east side of a southbound one-way street, police took a 34-year-old man into custody as a possible suspect. The shooting happened after a party during a dispute about the 34-year-old's phone.
Police said the shooter and the man shot may have known each other.
The 30-year-old was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in critical condition.
The 34-year-old man taken into custody was treated for a graze wound to the ankle. It was not immediately clear whether the wound was self-inflicted or whether someone else fired the shot.
The 34-year-old, who was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in custody, has not been charged.

31-year-old man shot in Pilsen

A 31-year-old man was shot while driving his vehicle in the Pilsen neighborhood, police said.
The shooting happened about 5:15 a.m in the 900 block of West 19th Street. The man was taken with a gunshot wound to the leg to the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, where his condition was stabilized.

$250K bail for Logan Square neighborhood man facing sexual abuse charges

Bail was set at $250,000 today for a 37-year-old man charged with sexually abusing a CTA rider on the Brown Line who spotted him two days later on a train platform sporting the same red gym shoes he was wearing during the attack.
Echevarria, of the 2600 block of North Harding Avenue, was charged with criminal sexual abuse and failure to register as a sex offender.
Echevarria, who was wearing red gym shoes during the proceedings, is accused of sexually abusing a 25-year-old woman's while she was riding a crowded Brown Line train Tuesday morning.
A police report said the woman told Echevarria to stop several times and she tried to get away but couldn't move as the train traveled southbound from the Fullerton station.
Another rider eventually pulled  Echevarria off the woman and shielded her from him, allowing her to leave at the Sedgwick station.
While waiting for another Brown Line train Thursday at the Fullerton station, the woman noticed a man wearing the same red gym shoes that  Echevarria had on two days earlier, according to the report. She alerted CTA employees, who did not allow Echevarria to board a train and called police.

2 charged in South Shore slaying

A judge denied bail today for a 17-year-old boy and set a $500,000 bail for an 18-year-old man after they were charged with murder for the September shooting of a man in the South Shore neighborhood.
Omar Gunn, 17, of the 7600 block of East End Avenue, and Anthony Wells, 18, of the 7100 block of South Jeffery Boulevard, both appeared before Judge Israel Desierto, charged with murder.
The victim, 18-year-old Jaleel Pearson, was chased into a store and shot in the arm and chest on Sept. 20 about 6:15 p.m. in the 2200 block of East 71^st Street.
After being shot, Pearson was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead at 6:59 p.m. that day.
Police arrested Gunn on Wednesday and Wells on Thursday

Oak Park man charged in June fatal shooting

A Cook County judge denied bail Saturday for an Oak Park man accused of fatally shooting another man in June in the Austin neighborhood.
Craig Bryan, of the 400 block of West Washington Boulevard in the west suburb, was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with the shooting death of Keith Sutton, 24. Bryan shot Sutton once in the head and once in the shoulder after the two men fought for control of a handgun at about 10:17 p.m. June 2 in the 5700 block of West Bloomingdale Avenue.
Sutton, of the 1700 block of North Monitor Avenue, was pronounced dead at about 7:50 p.m.. He died from complications of a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide
Before Sutton died, Bryan had been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a handgun. While police took him into custody for the first time, he kicked open a squad car door and tried to escape

Indiana man charged in Southside sex assaults

A 26-year-old man who was arrested in Indiana in connection with three sexual assaults that occurred on Chicago's Far South Side in the early morning hours of Oct. 9 has been charged with them.
Terrell Rush, 26, of the 1800 block of Perrine Street in Lafayette, Ind., was charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of criminal trespassing,
The rampage occurred early Oct. 9 a few blocks apart in the Fernwood and Washington Heights neighborhoods. The first attack took place about 3 a.m. near 103rd Street and Emerald Avenue when a man broke into a home, sexually assaulted a mother and daughter at knife point and robbed them.
About 90 minutes later, the same man broke into another home just a few blocks away but was scared off by the family dog before he could sexually assault a 11-year-old girl.
Then at about 6:40 a.m., the man confronted a 14-year-old girl at knife point about a block away as she walked to a bus stop to attend school. He dragged her into a backyard behind a home and sexually assaulted her before a woman resident chased him away.

The guardian of a 9-month-old boy has been charged with murder several weeks after she beat him, shook him and slammed his head against a changing table.
Aiden Duke was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital on Sept. 28 and Patricia McKinney, 30, his guardian, was initially charged with aggravated battery to a child and ordered held in lieu of $2 million bail. McKinney has now been charged with first-degree murder.
Doctors alerted police after they determined Aiden, of the 7100 block of South Bennett Avenue, had suffered rib and skull fractures and other injuries believed to be the result of child abuse. He was declared dead at 4:45 p.m. Oct. 1, the day after McKinney initially appeared in court.
On Sept. 28, McKinney became angry because Aiden would not stop crying, prosecutors said today. McKinney held Aiden up in her arms, squeezing him and then shaking him until he stopped crying.
When Aiden started crying again, McKinney slammed him onto a bed and hit in the abdomen several times.
Later in the day, McKinney heard Aiden crying again, and went to pick him up. She slammed his head against the metal frame of a baby changing table, and when she realized he was no longer breathing, she began doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called 911.
Aiden was taken to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, where doctors determined he had numerous injuries from child abuse. Among his injuries traceable to child abuse were skull fractures, as well as rib fractures in various states of healing, a broken left elbow, a bone chip from his left shoulder, a fractured left leg bone and possible brain atrophy.
Following an autopsy Oct. 2, the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined Aiden died from multiple injuries from child abuse in a homicide.
McKinney admitted to investigators that she had shaking Aiden, hitting him and slamming him down

Woman critically injured, her dog killed in attack by 3 pitbulls (More violence from the non-violent breed)

A woman was critically injured and her dog killed when they were attacked by three other dogs while out for a walk this evening in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.
The woman was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in critical condition following the attack in the 8700 block of South Cregier Avenue this evening.
The woman was walking her dog on Cregier about 6:30 p.m. when three other dogs attack hers, and she tried to stop them. The woman was severely injured in the attack
The owner of the three dogs tried to intervene too, and also was injured.
The second woman, age 23, was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.
The three dogs were taken into the custody of the city's Commission on Animal Care and Control

Mayor Emanual, while at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of a new daycare center in the Rogers Park neighborhood, was confronted by a group of angry citizens who wanted to know what he would do to stop the rash of cellphone robberies occurring through out the city . A caught off guard Mayor held his ground stating " Robberies? What robberies? There are no cellphone robberies in Chicago, only young men wishing to upgrade their free "Obama Phones", that we should remember only gives them 250 free minutes a month and also remember that phone is a basic bare knuckles phone, that they are forced to use. I don't see anything wrong with people wanting to upgrade their phone. As I've stated in the past we've eliminated unwanted children by supporting a woman's right to choose, we've eliminated homicides in our city by supporting a community's right to choose and we have now eliminated I-phone robberies by supporting a young inner-city man's right to choose. If you would check our official statistics at cityofchicago.org, you would see the great job we've done totally eliminating most crimes in the city since I have taken office."

3 teens charged in Northwest Side robberies

Three 15-year-old boys face robbery charges after they used toy guns to hold up a woman and a 14-year-old girl in the O’Hare neighborhood Thursday night.
The three boys were arrested at or near the Cumberland Blue Line station a within about 15 minutes of the robberies, which took place just after 7 p.m. Thursday. Police had to chase one of them onto the CTA right-of-way to catch him, causing a brief shutdown of Blue Line service.
One of the robberies took place in the 8700 block of West Bryn Mawr Avenue a little after 7:05 p.m., when a group of teens approached a 31-year-old woman, showed a weapon and demanded property from her. They took the woman’s backpack and cell phone and fled.
About the same time, a 14-year-old girl walking in the 5400 block of North East River Road—about a block away from the other robbery—was approached by a group of teens, and one of them displayed a gun and announced a robbery. The group took a smartphone and earphones from the girl and ran off.
A few minutes later, officers located five teenage boys at the Cumberland Blue Line station, and quickly caught several of them. One of the 15-year-olds who later was charged got off the Cumberland platform and ran onto the Blue Line tracks before he was caught.
In the boys’ possession police found a backpack with two toy guns that matched the description of those used in the robberies.
Two of the 15-year-olds were charged with two counts of armed robbery, and the third was charged with one count of armed robbery. The other two taken into custody were released without charges.

Women robbed on Southwest Side at, near Orange Line

Police are warning Southwest Side residents of a robber who’s targeted women at two Orange Line “L” stops in the last week.
In both robberies, the man or boy went up to a woman and took her purse and cell phone by force.
Most recently, the robber went up to a woman in the 4900 block of South Western Avenue, at a bus stop near the Orange Line Western Avenue stop on Wednesday just before 10 a.m.
On Oct. 12, a woman was on the “L” in the 4900 block of South Kedzie Avenue when she was robbed.
The robber is described as a black, between the ages of 16 and 21, standing about 5-foot-10 to 6-foot-1 and weighing about 160 pounds. In the most recent robbery, he was wearing a gray jacket and black pants.

15-year-old girl shot in Fuller Park

A 15-year-old girl was shot in Fuller Park
The girl was shot about 11:10 p.m. near 43rd Street and Princeton Avenue while she was in a truck with four other people, including her cousin. 
The truck slowed to see someone the driver knew but the group fled in the truck when they heard gunfire. Police stopped the SUV in the Canaryville neighborhood, in the 4300 block of South Parnell Avenue, and found the girl.
She was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in stable condition

Rapper shot in Bucktown

At about 11:45 p.m. a man was shot six times outside Los Recuerdos club in the Bucktown neighborhood, in the 2300 block of West Fullerton Avenue. 
Police identified the man as a rapper named 'Slamma' whose image appeared on a poster directly behind where he had been shot. He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

25-year-old man shot in Chatham

A 25-year-old man suffered a graze wound in the 900 block of East 82nd Street. He was outside about 10:40 p.m. when someone approached on a bicycle and shot him. He was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital with a chest wound and is in good condition.

Police kill knife-wielding man in Bridgeport

A Chicago police officer shot and killed a man who was waving a butcher knife during a domestic disturbance in a Bridgeport home early Friday morning.
Felix Valdez, 44 was shot around 1:10 a.m. in his apartment in the 3200 block of South Halsted Street, the same block as the parking garage for the 9th District police station
Officers were sent to the second-floor apartment above Taqueria San Jose for a domestic disturbance, according to Patrick Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police .
The man had apparently beaten his girlfriend and was standing over her holding two knives.
An officer told the man to drop the knife three times and, when he didn't, she shot him, Camden said. Neighbors reported hearing as many as five shots.
The police department's statement said the man lunged at the officers instead of complying with their commands.
The officer was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for observation, shook up after the shooting but otherwise uninjured

Dad accused of trying to kill witnesses against son

A Chicago father was charged in federal court Thursday with trying to hire a hit man to kill two witnesses who were scheduled to testify against his son at the son’s upcoming murder trial.
A government informant tipped off law enforcement Sunday that Euripides Caguana had called him two days earlier and told the informant that he wanted the two witnesses killed by Saturday. He wanted to ensure they could not testify next week during the trial of his son Travis Caguana, 19, according to a federal complaint charging him with murder-for-hire.
The younger Caguana is accused of killing Dante Smallwood, 18, in June 2011 on the Southwest Side.
Caguana, 59, of the 3700 block of West 81st Place, and the informant met Monday at a Northwest Side restaurant to discuss the details of the hit. At that meeting near Addison Street and Pulaski Road, Caguana revealed that he had followed the two witnesses “around for some time to track their movements” .
Caguana told the person he had followed the witnesses for “some time’’ and handed over pictures of the men and notes on their movements.
The complaint states that, on Tuesday evening, Caguana asked during a recorded cell phone call, “Why don’t you come by the house?” The person he initially approached by Caguana replied, "I got dude (the hit man) on standby because he’s ready. You got ‘em, right [the money for the gun]?
“Yeah, yeah, we’re gonna do it. . .We’re gonna do it,’’ Caguana responded.
During the next few days, the person and an undercover officer posing as a hit man engaged in a series of recorded conversations and meetings.
Monday, the person met Caguana at his home and Caguana took money out of the trunk of a champagne-colored Toyota sedan and gave him $500 for the gun, according to the complaint. They discussed how he would pay $5,000 for one victim and $2,000 for the other.
They drove around in the car and visited the witnesses' homes before agreeing to get together the next day, Wednesday, to meet the “hit man’’ at Chase Park, at Clark Street and Leland Avenue.
At the park that morning, as law enforcement officers hid and watched, Caguana talked with the person and the undercover officer posing as the hit man.
Caguana told them, “This guy’s gotta go first’’. He also gave them details about what time the witnesses went to work. When the person offered to have them killed that day, Caguana replied, “We can do them both at the same time’’ .
They agreed that $2,000 was to be a “down payment'' and that Caguana would pay the balance after the first man was killed, according to the complaints. Caguana was arrested as they left in separate cars.
Caguana, of the 3700 block of West 81st Place in the Ashburn neighborhood, remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing next Wednesday.
