A Cook County Jail inmate scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on charges of killing his baby son late last year was found hanged in his jail cell Sunday night.
An autopsy today for inmate Enoch A. Hayslett, 27, of Lynwood, found he died from a hanging and his death was ruled a suicide.
Hayslett was pronounced dead at 9:11 p.m. Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Authorities found Hayslett, who was accused of murdering his child, about 8:20 p.m. alone in his cell after apparently committing suicide, according to Cook County sheriff's spokesman Ben Breit. He said that Hayslett was in the maximum security division of the jail. Breit said officers tried to resuscitate him on the scene before he was taken to Mount Sinai.
Breit could not disclose if Hayslett left a note or say why he would kill himself. There was no foul play involved, added Breit.
Murder charges were filed against Hayslett in December, 2012, following the death of his 8-month-old son, WGN-TV news said at the time. He also faced battery charges for injuring two other children.
The family originally said 8-month-old Lamar Hayslett had accidentally drowned but an investigation revealed the baby suffered skull fractures. His twin brother also had skull fractures but was treated for the injuries. Their mother was not charged. DCFS had removed all the children from the family's home
