Crowds of fans rushed out of a Far South Side stadium tonight when a disturbance
erupted during a Chicago Public League high school football game.
It all
started about 8:40 p.m. at Gately Stadium in the 800 block of East 103rd Street
as Simeon was up 6-0 over Morgan Park High School with 10:27 left in the third
quarter.
“It was a large disturbance,’’ said a police spokesman. “We don’t know the nature of it yet."
One person with a
stab wound was taken from that location to Roseland Community Hospital.
A witness on the scene stated- From the press box, everything seemed normal, with both sides totally
into the game, before the melee began.
Suddenly a wave of fans on the
Morgan Park sidelines started running out of the stands, apparently trying to
get out of the stands as fast as possible.
Someone in the press box
ordered the lights to be put out during the melee, and a person could be heard
yelling: "Get down, get down – shots, get down, shots."
