A Southwest Side woman faces felony DUI charges in connection with a weekend drunk driving crash that left a 28-year-old motorist dead.
Jessica Bahena, 18, had been charged with misdemeanor DUI and cited with failure to yield the right of way to the left, having no license and no insurance.
But prosecutors approved that Bahena, of the 4500 block of South Richmond Street, be charged with aggravated DUI.
Bahena is expected to appear before a judge later this morning at Central Bond Court.
The woman told police she'd been drinking vodka and orange juice before crashing a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu into another car that she said she didn't see, according to police. She suffered injuries to her hands and legs and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was placed under arrest.
The collision happened about 2 a.m. Sunday near Sawyer and Archer avenues in the Brighton Park neighborhood.
The Malibu was traveling northeast on Archer when the driver failed to yield while trying to turn left onto Sawyer and crashed into a 2011 Nissan Maxima heading southwest on Archer.
The Nissan's driver, identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Ahmed M. Kighta, was killed.
Kighta, 28, of the 9700 block of South Harlem Avenue in Chicago Ridge, was pronounced dead at 2:48 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Officers on the scene reported that the woman driving the Malibu had bloodshot eyes and her breath smelled of alcohol, police said. She told police that she had been staying at a motel in the 5400 block of South Archer Avenue, and had drank vodka and orange juice while with her boyfriend
