A motorist who collided with a CTA bus, killing his passenger, was hit with two felonies after authorities said he was drunk during the collision.
In addition to receiving several citations, including DUI and failure to reduce speed, Liefem Okundaya, 27, was also charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI -- both felonies -- for the Saturday morning crash that killed Simeon Allen, 30.The violent head-on crash happened at about 7:20 a.m. on the 6600 block of South Halsted Street, police said. The accident involved a CTA bus and a Ford Taurus sedan.
A No. 8 Halsted Street bus was traveling southbound when the northbound Taurus crossed over to the bus lane striking the bus, said Lambrini Lukidis, a CTA spokeswoman.
The bus was carrying 10 passengers but none of them were injured, she said. All passengers refused treatment at the scene.
Both men inside the Taurus were taken to Stroger Hospital,
Allen, of the 0-99 block of West 62nd Street, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that morning.
Okundaya was taken at serious-to-critical condition at the time. His condition wasn't immediately known this morning, but police said it wasn't clear when he would appear before a judge for a bond hearing.
