Police: Bogus cop tries to lure kids in Logan Square area

A Cicero man is accused of trying to lure four children into a Ford Crown Victoria while claiming to be a police officer Tuesday night in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side
Benny Lee Butler, 26, of the 2400 block of South 53rd Street in Cicero, was charged with four counts of false impersonation of a police officer and four counts of child abduction
According to a police report, Butler was behind the wheel of a white Ford Crown Victoria when he pulled up alongside police officers who were stopped in traffic in the 1600 block of West Belmont Avenue and asked officers: “What’s wrong with kids nowadays? They walk all alone in this cold weather and when you ask to help them, they don’t want it,’’.
The officers became suspicious and curbed the vehicle in the 1100 block of West Belmont. They asked Butler where he had tried to “help’’ kids and Butler replied that he had stopped at Milwaukee and Drake avenue where he saw four children between the ages of 10 and
14 walking alone.
He said he asked the kids if they were OK or needed any assistance.
The officers called to see if Butler’s car had been involved in any disturbances and learned the driver was being sought for pretending to be a “cop” while trying to lure four children in the 2900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue.
The children told police Butler had a black leather case that contained a gold badge and ID card that he showed to them. When the kids refused to accept a ride, Butler fled.
Butler was placed under arrest about 7 p.m. after officers found the case and an “OSI” identification card, along with four additional “credentials” classifying him as an intelligence officer with rank of “major” in the United States Air Force that was affixed to a FedEx store charge card
