Joseph Mbatchou pleaded guilty to one count of attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault and he was sentenced to 20 years by Judge Joseph G. Kazmierski, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
A woman told police that Mbatchou, who was 29 at the time, came into the restroom at 5100 N. Simonds Drive in Margate Park the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, struck her in the face and attempted to sexually assault her
Witnesses told police they heard screams from the restroom and a man rushed in and broke up the attack. The attacker scuffled with the man who rushed in, hit him in the face, then calmly walked out of the restroom, the witnesses said.
"Like nothing happened," one witness told the Tribune at the time. The attacker said, "That's OK, I'm with the FBI," and walked away.
As he casually walked south on the beach, a man on a bike followed the attacker and pointed him out to police, the witness said.
The woman who was attacked was bleeding from the forehead as paramedics took her out of the restroom, the witness said.
Mbatchou was convicted of residential burglary in 2007 and was sentenced to four years in prison. He was released from the Dixon Correctional Center in July of 2008 and was discharged from parole in July 2010, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
