Chicago police arrested seven men and seized more than 12,000 pounds of cannabis worth an estimated $33 million in an anti-drug operation Monday.
A Chicago Police Narcotics Unit, acting on reports that a drug trafficking organization linked to several street gangs had large distribution and storage centers in the city, began looking at a warehouse in the 1000 block of South Kolmar Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.
Monday, officers stopped a van leaving the warehouse grounds and found 2,500 pounds of cannabis inside. A subsequent search of the warehouse found 9,800 pounds of cannabis. Seven vehicles, a rifle and handgun were also seized.
Arrested were Salvador Lopez, 28, of California; Jesus Munoz, 20, of Woodville, Calif.; Ruben Salazar, 37, of the 2700 block of North Artesian Avenue in Chicago; Sotero Salazar, 43, of the 6200 block of West Cuyler Avenue in Chicago; Manuel Sanchez, 37, no address; Calderon Sandoval, 25, of Grandview, Wash.; and Daniel Saucedo, 36, of the 5900 block of South Austin Avenue in Chicago.
All were charged with cannabis possession; Manuel Sanchez was also charged with cannabis trafficking.
