Alcohol was a factor in a one-car accident that killed a toddler and seriously injured three other children on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 75th Street, according to an Illinois state trooper.
Four adult women also were injured in the crash that closed the roadway jammed with holiday traffic for about two hours Monday evening.
DUI charges are pending against the woman who was driving, state police said.
Killed in the crash was 11-month-old Everett Bramlett, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. at the scene. Everett would have turned a year old next week, the office said.
Four women and four children were southbound in a green 1993 two-door Oldsmobile Cutlass on Interstate 90/94 when the driver lost control and struck a guard rail, police said, citing preliminary reports.
Three of the four children were ejected from the car. None of them were in a child restraint or wearing a seat belt, police said this morning.
Three children were taken in serious to critical condition to Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago Hospitals, one adult in serious to critical condition to Stroger Hospital, one adult in serious to -critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and two adults in fair to serious condition to the University of Chicago Hospitals, according to Fire Department officials.
Police said the driver was taken to Stroger Hospital.
As of 8 p.m., a 6-year-old boy was listed in critical condition and two children, both girls, ages 3 and 4, were listed in good condition at Comer, a spokesman said.
