- Memorial Day’s unseasonably hot weather turned dangerous early Monday evening, forcing the closure of North Avenue Beach and sending four beach-goers to hospitals, one a young man in critical condition.[...] In Chicago, police closed North Avenue Beach about 6 p.m., shortly after ambulances were summoned there to treat eight people who fell sick on the crowded lakefront spot, many complaining of illness related to the heat, said Larry Langford, director of the Chicago Fire Department Media Affairs.“They started falling down and were light headed,” he said.Firefighters responded and treated four beach-goers at the scene before taking four others to area hospitals. One, an 18-year-old man, was “found unresponsive” and he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Langford said.
North Avenue Beach looked like a bomb hit from what we saw on the news. Stories are trickling in about gang disturbances all over the place and no police response except "close the beach." It kind of makes one long for the days of Summer Mobile.
THIS IS WHAT THE MAYOR SAID: Mayor Rahm Emanuel said today that he agreed with the decision Monday by Chicago police to close North Avenue Beach after several people began showing signs of heat-related sickness.
THIS IS WHAT THE POLICE SAID: gang fights everywhere. thugs everywhere. oh yea we closed it cause it was hot. at the beach......
The beach was jammed packed. It's 95 degrees. People at the beach smoking weed, drinking , throwing up in the sand, passing out, fighting and stealing. About 10 cops assigned and thousands of people. Reports of 3,000 more teens headed to North Ave Beach.
The beach was closed and a good thing it was. It could have gotten really bad....
018 blew up in a big way again, large mobs coming from the lake started doing what they do best- mayhem! various robberies and roving packs of savages rampaging throughout the area, r&r mcdonalds, portillos, all felt the wrath.. it's gonna be a long summer in 018... 001 was having problems as well...It wasn't the heat that got the beach closed. Come on, it was only in the 80's, not exactly unusual weather in Chicago. Not to mention the fact that people go to the beach to cool down. The reason the beaches were closed was because of the out of control honor students/flash mobs. There were over 2,000 teenagers (being PC) who flocked to the beaches and proceeded to fight, attack others, rob, and destroy anything they could get their hands on. After the beaches were closed, these same "youths" went on to terrorize Michigan Ave., Millennium Park, and Navy Pier. All night long it was battery in progress, robbery in progress, assault in progress, etc. But of course we won't hear about any of that. I encourage all civilians to video record all instances that they see and post it on the internet. The stores and politicians aren't going to allow it to get out in the media. After all, we have to keep those tourists coming. They have no idea what they are walking into. Manpower of course was an issue. One 99 unit sent to stop hundreds of vehicles and foot traffic from entering the beach area. 99 units being sent alone to disperse mobs of 80-100 people on Michigan. Meanwhile, unrelated calls just kept stacking up putting 018 into a backlog. So there you go taxpayers, 500 officers "freed up" and not one of them was sent to your neighborhood........
The downtown beaches were total f-ing mayhem. Roving bands of "teens" (figure out from where!) were urinating and starting fights everywhere. Who knows how many Iphone thefts/robberies there were, as these were pushed down the dispatch queue.
"Ok, you just got robbed? And the offender ran? Ok, call 311 for a report." The teen thugs have discovered new hunting grounds and anyone that lets their kid go down there is an idiot. After the "teens" were done savagizing the beach, they headed to hunting ground number two.... Michigan Avenue!
Yeah baby! 1,000 new cops on the street? Rahm, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!!.........
I was on a friend's boat yesterday and had a great view of both North ave and Oak st beaches from the lake. Both beaches were packed beyond all belief. While boating not to far from the shore I had never seen so many shitbirds, shitheads, thugs, and hoodlums in my life in 001st and 018th dist sides of the lakefront. When going back to the harbor we were not to far from where North Ave beach extends to its farthest point on the lake. Like most times several people were waving at the boats. This time four punks threw the Latin King sign at the boat. I have never seen that happen before.
I said to my wife and friends on the boat that I'm glad I work in the hood. The supposed nice parts of the city had more shitheads walking around than lawndale ever does.
Supt McCarthy is going to have to redeploy resources to 001, 018, and 023. The lakefront is going to be up for grabs.........
THIS IS WHAT A CITIZEN WITNESS SAID:
i was at the lake front today and here is what I saw; A completely out of controll group of "teens" at the Oak St. Beach and at the Olive Park Beach. They were knocking people from their bikes at the Oak St. beach and then laughing and high-fiving each other. The nice northsiders were completly taken aback when the "teens" would push them from their bikes.
There were two CPD officers in the crowd, a tall african-american officer and a shorter white woman. She was yelling at the "teens" and telling them to leave the bike path. I think that she was as scared as I was. I saw the other officer trying to get a man from the crowd who was being beaten. He was trying to help the guy.
I think that the CPD was afraid that they were losing controll of the situation and so they closed the beaches.
I am not a policeman, but I very much support the police. I think that the new mayor and new CPD Chief should take off the gloves, and adopt a Guialini style policing model. A model where all offences are treated seriously, and everyone respects the law and the police. I do not know if you have the manpower, or more importantly the backing to adopt this model.
I was sickened by what I saw this afternoon, and unfortunatly some event like this will soon be on YouTube. If some nice family from Omaha is filmed getting the crap beaten out of them at the beach it will have national repurcussions. I think that this sort of behavior has already affected parts of the city.
