5 people were wounded, including a child, during a drive-by shooting Tuesday night at a barbeque on the Southeast Side. The barbeque was held in honor of a teenage gang member who was shot to death last year, police said.
A 10-year-old child was taken to an area hospital after being shot in the ankle, said Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro, citing preliminary information. A 26-year-old man was shot in the head and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
The shooting happened about 9 p.m. at East 79th Street and South Escanaba Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood, where a large group of people were attending the barbecue.
Preliminary reports stated the victims were standing on the street when a black vehicle traveling westbound on 79th Street pulled up and an occupant started shooting into the crowd, Alfaro said.
Two men, ages 23 and 22 were both shot in the foot. Another man, 26, was shot in the thigh. Those victims, including the child, were taken to South Shore Hospital where they were treated and released, Alfaro said.
The fourth man, who was shot in the head, was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center.
