3 shot, 1 fatally, in Bronzeville neighborhood

Three people were shot, one fatally, late Friday afternoon in a drive-by shooting in the Bronzeville neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The three male victims were shot and wounded by gunfire from the passing vehicle just before 5 p.m. in the 800 block of East 46th Street, said police spokesman Officer John Mirabelli, citing early reports. Police didn't release a description of the vehicle.
Quintin Turner, 18, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m. at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Police said he suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
A 20-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and ankle, while a 17-year-old boy suffered a broken leg resulting from a gunshot wound, said Officer Dan O'Brien. Police initially believed the teen was struck by the suspect's vehicle rather than shot.

Turner and another victim were taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, while the third victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
The shooting happened near the Henry W. McGee Post Office and Engine Company 45, both located at the intersection of 46th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue.
Postal worker Octavia Williams was sorting through mail and helping customers inside the post office this afternoon when she heard the crack of gunfire and people screaming.

"I saw bodies lying everywhere," she said this evening as she stood outside the post office. "I could see a man lying in the middle of the road and he looked lifeless."
Members of the nearby firehouse rushed into the street to try and help the wounded, Williams said.
Over the last week, Williams said she had heard gunfire in the area while at work and had a feeling something worse might be coming.
"I felt nauseated and angry," she said. "I never want to see anything like this ever again."
Despite the shooting occurring on a street during rush hour, few passersby or onlookers remained in the area afterward. A piece of yellow police tape stretching across 46th Street at South Cottage Grove Avenue was the only signs of the chaos that occurred.
Felicia Preston, 58, stood across the street from the shooting scene late Friday afternoon and shook her head.

"It's saddening and frustrating," said Preston, who is a retired high school teacher and lives in the neighborhood.

"It's not even warm yet and the shooting's beginning already," said Preston, adding that she often walks down 46th street to go to a Pilates class.
