A man and woman have been charged with the shotgun slaying of the 73-year-old owner of a North Center gas station in 2008, police said.
One of the people charged, Ignazio Burton, 42, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in an unrelated case, police said. The man and his alleged accomplice, Rose Burton, 44, of Sandwich, were both arrested and charged on Friday with first degree murder, police said.
The duo's relationship to each other was unclear, police said.
The two are charged with the slaying of Robert Ferris of the 4300 block of North Western Avenue, police said.
Ferris was found dead in the back yard of his home on Aug. 24, 2008 about 5 a.m. by relatives who became concerned after he failed to show at his gas station, Ferris Shell Service, which was located on the same block as his home, police said.
Ferris was known to carry cash in his shirt pocket and when police found his body, the pocket had been ripped off his shirt, police said. No money was found with his body.
The suspects were arrested Friday and allegedly made statements implicating themselves in the killing, police said.
Ignazio Burton is currently serving a 10-year state prison sentence for attacking a prison guard while he was serving an earlier three-year sentence after being convicted of theft.
