Two people are in custody after they allegedly carjacked and battered a man who tracked down his car and then alerted police early this morning, police said.
The carjacking occurred about 1:10 a.m. on the 1600 block of North Francisco Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood when the 33-year-old man was in his 2005 Chrysler 300 sedan, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
The man was attacked by three males who are in their late teens, Perez said. One of the teens was armed with a handgun and the victim was hit in the back of the head when his car was taken, Perez said.
The victim then got into another vehicle and was driving around trying to find his car, Perez said. When he spotted the car about 1:20 a.m. he called police to say he had found his car and was following it, Perez said.
Officers then found the car about 2 a.m. in the process of being abandoned near a CTA station on the 400 block of South Western Avenue on the Near West Side neighborhood.
Police arrested two of the suspects but the third person was still being sought, police said.
Charges are pending.
