John Merritt, 29, of the 1500 block of Clarence Avenue in west suburban Berwyn, and Kevin Jones, 34, of the 3800 block of West Ohio Street on the city’s West Side, were both charged with felony theft. Jones was also wanted on a traffic warrant.
Tuesday about 3 p.m. in the 2900 block of West Division Street, a witness told police he saw Merritt standing near a mail carrier while Jones was looking around “as if to see who was watching’’ .
A few minutes later, the witness saw the two -- including Merritt holding packages of mail -- running westbound on Division Street before jumping in a green Chevrolet Cavalier in the 1100 block of North Richmond Street.
The witness called police and officers found the car and pulled it over in the 1600 block of North Kimball Avenue. Merritt and Jones were taken to the Shakespeare District police station and police found several bundles of mail addressed to people in the 60622 zip code inside a dark blue bag they were seen dumping out of the car before police stopped it,
