The shooting happened about 6:15 p.m. Saturday in the 2900 block of South State Street. Police said a gunman on foot opened fire in that block, striking the 54-year-old man and a 26-year-old man as well.
The older man, identified as Ralph McNeal, of the 5200 block of South Indiana Avenue, was shot in the back and died shortly after at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The younger man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was also taken to Stroger, where he was listed in serious condition.
Police said at least one of the two men who were shot recognized the shooter.
Authorities announced early this morning they had charged Lamont Grant, who lives on the block where the shooting happened, with one count of first degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.
Grant's family members contacted The Rev. Corey Brooks late Tuesday, saying that Grant wanted to turn himself in, Brooks said. The South Side pastor and anti-violence activist spent several hours with the man, whom he had never met before, Brooks said.
The two prayed at the church Brooks preaches, shared a meal and met with relatives before walking into the Area Central police headquarters early this morning, Brooks said.
Grant also recorded a brief video addressing violence and asked Brooks to deliver a message to McNeal's family, the pastor said. Brooks
