A 32-year-old woman was shot near a South Side elementary school this afternoon while with her two children, including a baby she was carrying, but there were no reports of students or staff being injured.
Paramedics were sent to the 1600 block of East 93rd Street around 3:30 p.m., on the same block as the Amelia Earhart Elementary School.
The victim is a woman who was shot in the chest and sent to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.
The woman was carrying a baby when she was shot, but the child was not harmed. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, with the bullet travelling through her body.
The woman was shot in the 1700 block of East 93rd Street about 3:27 p.m., and her condition had been stabilized.
The victim told police she was walking up to a residence with her two children, a 1-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy, when she heard what she thought were a series of fireworks.
After hearing another series, she felt a burning sensation to her chest and realized she’d been shot.
Police found a witness who told police while he was driving when he saw a gunman firing numerous shots at an male he did not know who was running southbound on Cornell Avenue from 93rd.
After hitting the woman, shots also pieced the front picture window of one home and upper level siding of another home.
The school was placed on lockdown by responding officers
