A Chicago man stabbed his 67-year-old mother to death on the landing of their Southeast Side apartment building and stole her purse and car before he was arrested snatching wine coolers from a suburban bowling alley.
Michael Spaulding, 32, was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying Monday of his mother, Virginia Spaulding, at the home they shared in the 1100 block of East 81st Street.
Spaulding appeared agitated in court, hiking up his jeans, laughing and shouting several times as prosecutors detailed the charges.
"Wasn't no mother of mine!" Spaulding yelled at one point during the hearing.
Judge James Brown ordered Spaulding held without bail at Cermak Health Services, the hospital wing of the Cook County Jail.
Prosecutors said a neighbor saw Spaulding stabbing his mother about 9:25 a.m. Monday on the second-floor landing of the apartment building. Spaulding went back into the apartment and changed clothes before stabbing her a few more times and fleeing in her vehicle.
Police arrived and found the victim on the landing with a knife still stuck in the body.
Later in the day, police in south suburban Evergreen Park stopped Spaulding in his mother's SUV for stealing wine coolers at Bleeker's Bowling Lanes.
Spaulding's criminal record includes felony convictions for armed robbery and attempted armed robbery and misdemeanor convictions for theft and possession of cannabis

Clearly he has mental issues. We never know what really happens behind closed doors, but I knew his mom; she was sweet and kind. He didn't have to stab her she only weighed about 115lbs and was at least 5'8" tall. All he had to do was push her and she would have fell. Praying much for this family...the mom, Virginia, just graduated three weeks ago from Seminary.
Speechless.
