A 58-year-old man found dead Saturday after firefighters discovered his body when
they responded to a fire at a home in the Brainerd neighborhood on the Far South
Side died from heart disease.
Leonard Bloomfield, 58, of the 9300 block of South Union Avenue, was dead on
the scene at his home following a fire Saturday. After an autopsy Sunday, the medical examiner's
office determined Bloomfield died from heart disease following alcohol
intoxication in an accident.
Chicago Fire Department officials were called to the 9300 block of South
Union Avenue at 1:53 p.m. Saturday for reports of heavy smoke coming from the
home at that location.
When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the basement of
a 1½-story home, and when they searched the home they discovered the man's body.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. There did not
appear to be any sign of trauma.
The fire was quickly put under control and the cause is under
investigation
