William D. Strickland, of the 400 block of East 95th Street, was charged late Friday with one count of first degree murder and one count of armed robbery with a firearm.
Strickland's grandfather, also named William Strickland, was shot about 3:30 a.m on March 2 after being approached by two male attackers outside his home in the South Side's Brainerd neighborhood.
In a news release announcing the charges, the Chicago Police Department listed the younger Strickland's home address as being in the same block where his grandfather lived. .
Police have said the shooting happened during what appears to have been a robbery.
