A South Side man was sentenced today to 50 years in prison for the murder of a man who had been on the way to his brother’s house for a family party in 2008 when he was shot to death in his own car.
Carl McCoy, 33, was found guilty in December of the slaying of Woodrow Culverson, 59, in the 6600 block of South King Drive on Aug. 30, 2008.
Culverson, of the 5300 block of South Wallace Street, was found in the passenger seat of his car, shot in the abdomen, after the car crashed into a light pole and witnesses saw McCoy jump out of the driver’s seat and run away about 9:30 p.m. that evening. Culverson had dropped his wife and sister off at home after a party and was going to his brother’s house for another family gathering when he was found shot, after McCoy told witnesses in the area to call an ambulance.
Culverson died about an hour later at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
McCoy denied having been in the car or knowing Culverson, but his DNA was found on the car’s driver’s side airbag, and witnesses said he was the driver of the car when it crashed. He was charged in late 2008 in connection with the slaying, after being arrested that fall on unrelated charges
