A 20-year-old Chicago man died and his passenger was injured after the vehicle he was driving split in half after crashing head-on into a light pole early Sunday morning on the Far South Side.
The man, identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Keith L. Smith of the 12000 block of South Perry Avenue, was travelling southbound at a high rate of speed about 12:25 a.m. on Michigan Avenue.
He lost control of the vehicle when he tried to overtake another vehicle, Estrada said, hit a curb, and struck a light pole head-on in the 11000 block of South Michigan Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood. The car, a 1996 Mitsubishi Galant, split in half.
Smith, who had to be extricated from the vehicle, suffered massive head injuries, Estrada said, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.
His passenger, a 20-year-old man, was also taken to Christ Hospital after complaining of leg pains and was treated and released
