A 17-year-old Rogers Park boy has died after being shot in the head by his father last weekend in an apparently accidental shooting.
Terrance Johnson, of the 1300 block of West Estes Avenue, was pronounced dead
at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday.
His father Charles Johnson was charged Monday with unlawful use of a weapon
by a felon, police said. Charles Johnson is being held on $50,000 bail.
The shooting occurred during an apparent struggle for control of the gun at
the family's apartment, and authorities have said it was an accident.
had hidden his gun in the garage but noticed the weapon had disappeared about
six months ago. When Johnson saw his .38 caliber
gun on his son's desk, he confronted the boy and the two began to argue.
When the boy picked up the gun, Johnson tried to wrestle the gun away and the
gun discharged, striking the 17-year-old.
Police found the boy in a bedroom, lying on a couch with a gunshot wound to
his right cheek. They found the gun on the floor.
