Terrance Johnson, of the 1300 block of West Estes Avenue, was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday.
His father Charles Johnson was charged Monday with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, police said. Charles Johnson is being held on $50,000 bail.
The shooting occurred during an apparent struggle for control of the gun at the family's apartment, and authorities have said it was an accident.
Johnson had hidden his gun in the garage but noticed the weapon had disappeared about six months ago. When Johnson saw his .38 caliber gun on his son's desk, he confronted the boy and the two began to argue.
When the boy picked up the gun, Johnson tried to wrestle the gun away and the gun discharged, striking the 17-year-old.
Police found the boy in a bedroom, lying on a couch with a gunshot wound to his right cheek. They found the gun on the floor.

Please people its not about blaming anyone;The mom just lost her son and its really sad.This child was a good boy never was into any trouble and the father was very caring so i feel sad for both son and father.This could happen to anyone who has a gun and child.i wish things could have been handle differently but it didnt .I dont wish this on anyone ,this was his soon so yes hes hurting.please people if you cant say any positive to the family to help them why say stupid shit?Again please keep the family in prayer not hurt them because this could be you and you family.
