State child welfare authorities are investigating allegations of neglect lodged
against the mother of an infant girl who died when she was
left unattended while being bathed at her Northwest Side home.
Julia
Duda, 2-1/2 months, of the 2800 block of North Nagle Avenue, was pronounced dead
at 10:39 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center.
Julia’s mother
left her unattended while she was bathing her so that she could make herself
coffee. When she returned, the baby was unresponsive and she called 911.
Emergency crews
were called to the scene at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday.
While an
autopsy Thursday was inconclusive and pending a police investigation, the
apparent cause of her death was listed as drowning, according to the medical
examiner’s office.
Julia’s death prompted an investigation of neglect
against the victim’s mother.
The agency has had no prior contact with
the family, and one other child who was living at the home is now being cared
for by other relatives
