Chicago police officers happened upon a drive-by shooting on the South Side and
exchanged shots with a gunman who had critically wounded a woman.
The shooting erupted around 11 p.m. in the 6700 block of South
Blackstone Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood and touched off a chaotic
scene as scores of officers, police dogs and a helicopter swarmed the area
looking for the gunman, who remained at-large this morning.
Officers had seen the gunman, dressed in black clothing and wearing
a black baseball cap, firing shots from a red Oldsmobile sedan on Blackstone
Avenue. One of the shots struck a woman in the head as the
Oldsmobile sped away, then crashed moments later a block south.
The gunman bailed out of the car and exchanged gunfire with police
but no one was struck.
Police took the Oldsmobile's driver into custody and found
two handguns in the car that may have been used in an earlier
shooting.
The woman, who lives near the scene of the shooting, was taken
to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and remained in critical condition this
morning
