Police catch suspect in attempted rape on Near North Side
Chicago police arrested a 21-year-old man Sunday morning who they say dragged a woman in an alley and attacked her as she was jogging through the Old Town Triangle neighborhood.
The woman, in her 50s, was going for an early morning jog when her attacker approached and grabbed her about 7:30 a.m. in the 300 block of West Menomonee Avenue.
The man then dragged her into an alley as she screamed, police said. He allegedly told her to keep quiet or he'd kill her.
Two other joggers then passed by and caught the attention of the attacker. The suspect then ran away from the scene.
Meanwhile, Near North District Police Officer Matt Peterson was patrolling the area when he heard a flash message on his radio about a robbery in progress at the Menomonee address. The message indicated that the suspect fled west, then south from the scene of the crime, later categorized as an attempted criminal sexual assault.
Knowing that the attacker fled south from the scene, Peterson drove in his marked squad into the 1300 block of North Hudson Avenue, about three-fourths of a mile from the Menomonee address, and spotted a man in the courtyard of an apartment building who matched the description of the suspect. Peterson also noticed the man was breathing heavily.
Peterson, and two other officers who met up with him outside the building, then questioned him.
When confronted by officers, the man told them he had been involved in a fight.
The officers put the man in handcuffs and arranged for a police wagon to bring him to the crime scene on Menomonee. It was there where the victim identified the man as her attacker.
The woman, whose name was not released, was taken via ambulance to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for cuts to her hand, finger, elbows, knees and a bruise above one eye.
No charges have been filed as of Sunday afternoon against the man, whose name was also not released. Area North detectives were continuing the investigation while the man remained in the Near North District lockup.
