Detectives ask for help finding robber targeting South Side shops

Chicago police detectives today released surveillance photos of a man who robbed at least six stores, most of them small retail shops, on the South Side last month.
Area South detectives are asking for help finding the man, who has been targeting the shops in the late afternoon and evening in the South Chicago, Calumet, Gresham and Morgan Park police districts. The robberies linked to the man happened between May 9 and May 25, between about 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
In the robberies, the man has gone into a store, handed a cashier a note, shown a handgun and demanded money. After receiving money, the man has then fled the shop.
In one of the robberies, the man entered a Calumet Heights neighborhood Family Dollar store in the 8900 block of South Stony Island Avenue about 8:45 p.m. on May 17, wearing all-black or dark clothing, with his shirt pulled up to cover his face and what looked like a pistol hidden under his shirt, police said. After handing a clerk a note, he was given cash and fled the scene.


 Other robberies include:

  • On May 9, the armed robbery of a restaurant about 8:30 p.m. in the 100 block of East 95th Street in the West Chesterfield neighborhood
  • On May 12, the aggravated robbery of a small retail store about 4:55 p.m. in the 8300 block of South Holland Road in the West Chatham neighborhood
  • The Family Dollar robbery May 17;
  • On May 24 about 8:48 p.m., the aggravated robbery of a small retail store in the 1200 block of West 95th Street in the Brainerd neighborhood
  • Also May 24, an armed robbery at a small retail store about 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of East 87th Street in the Chatham neighborhood.
  • On May 25, the attempted armed robbery of a small retail store about 8:49 p.m. in the 8300 block of South Cottage Grove in the East Chatham neighborhood

The robber is described as a black man or boy, between the ages of 17 and 25, standing 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing between 150 and 160 pounds. He has worn a black baseball cap, a dark jacket, blue jeans and dark shoes, with diamond earrings in both ears.
