A 14-year-old boy was in "very critical condition" after being pulled from
the water at North Avenue beach this afternoon after going there to swim with
friends.
The boy was taken from the beach to Lurie
Children's Hospital.
Fire department crews were called to the beach about 4:36 p.m., and found the
boy already out of the water.
The boy was discovered by lifeguards after two
teenage boys told lifeguards they had been at the beach with their friend, but
could not find him after last seeing him in the water.
The lifeguards called emergency crews, and formed a dive line--in which
several lifeguards swim along the bottom of the beach depth in a line to search
for someone. The lifeguards immediately found the boy and pulled
him from the water.
Lifeguards performed cardiopulmonary resuscisitation on the boy until
paramedics arrived and took over, then took the boy to the hospital.
