An 81-year-old woman died after she was hit by a Chevy Tahoe as she crossed
Devon Avenue in the West Rogers
Park neighborhood.
Tasoula Metropolos was struck in a crosswalk in the 2700 block of West Devon
Avenue and taken to St. Francis Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:11
p.m. Thursday.
The accident occurred near her home in the 6400 block of North Fairfield
Avenue.
The driver of the SUV, a 28-year-old Javier Mercado Jr., made a right turn
from North Washtenaw Avenue onto westbound Devon when he heard screams and
stopped his car.
He found Metropolos under his SUV and called 911 immediately, police said.
Mercado also lived nearby, on the 6400 block of North Washtenaw.
He was cited for negligent driving and hitting a pedestrian
