An off-duty Cook County Sheriff's officer, awakened by an alarm, fired shots
at a burglar while chasing him from the officer's garage early today.
The officer, 41, was awakened about 3:10 a.m. when an alarm went off in his
home in the 6000 block of South Justine Avenue.
The alarm showed that someone might be in his garage, so the officer went out
to his garage and interrupted a man who was apparently stealing tools.
The officer told the burglar that he was a sheriff's officer, but the burglar
took off running. At some point nearby, the burglar turned and
pointed something at the officer, and the officer fired his gun, but the burglar
apparently wasn't hit and got away.
After the burglar escaped, the officer was able to tell police that some of
the tools in his garage were missing.
The burglar is described as a black man with a dark complexion, standing
between 5 feet 10 inches and six feet tall. At the time of the
burglary, he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark blue pants
