Chicago police officer shot on the South Side

A Chicago Police officer was shot in the chest area and seriously wounded during a foot chase on the South Side Monday night.
The South Chicago District officer was shot just above his bulletproof vest and initially taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said. He was then transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he underwent an hours-long surgery, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the police union.
Camden said the officer's condition is serious.
The officer, 47 and on the force about eight years, was shot at about 10:45 p.m. in the 8400 block of South Kingston Avenue after responding to a "juvenile disturbance,".
When officers tried to stop four curfew violators on the 8500 block of South Kingston, for a field interview, one of them fled into an alley.
An officer pursued the offender into a front yard, where the suspect fired shots, striking the officer in the upper body.
The gunman fled the scene and the officer may have fired back. A description of the suspect was not available.

UPDATE:
A decorated Chicago police officer was awake and aware this afternoon after being shot in the chest during a foot chase on the South Side. A person of interest is being questioned.
South Chicago District tactical officer Del Pearson, 47, was shot just above his bulletproof vest and underwent surgery through the night at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

UPDATE:
A 20-year-old man was charged with attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Chicago Police Officer Del Pearson, authorities said Wednesday night.
