A white SUV fleeing from a fender-bender crashed into another car on the South Side tonight, killing two children and injuring as many as four other people.
The crash at 6:37 p.m. killed a 6-year-old and a 19-month-old, and left a trail of debris nearly a block long on Western Avenue between 45th Place and 45th Street.
The SUV was involved in a minor accident with another vehicle at about 43rd Street and sped southbound about two blocks before crashing into a northbound green sedan near 45th Street.
Both vehicles were extremely damaged, and debris was scattered on the street and nearby grassy areas from 45th Street to 45th place.
Fire officials responded with an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 and took six people to area hospitals, five of them reported in serious-to-critical condition and one in fair-to-serious condition.

The driver of the white SUV was one of the other injured victims taken to a hospital, and Zala said the driver was considered "a person of interest" in the investigation

The children's father, Eric Ochoa, was injured and remained hospitalized Sunday. The children's mother, Bernice Cabrera, also was injured, but she was released from hospital care

A Chicago man was high on opiates and PCP and fleeing a traffic crash when his SUV slammed into a car at a Southwest Side intersection, killing two young children and seriously injuring their parents.
Joey Chavez, 36, of the 2200 block of South St. Louis Avenue, was ordered held on a $550,000 bond on multiple charges of aggravated DUI resulting in death and injury
