Robbery suspect, boy wounded during attempted West Side hold-up

Authorities said a would-be robber was recovering at an area hospital under police guard this morning after he was shot with his own weapon during an early evening attempted street hold-up on the city's West Side.
A 10-year-old boy was also wounded when the gunman and his intended target struggled over the weapon inside a convenience store in the 700 block of South Pulaski Road in the Lawndale neighborhood.
At about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, the 26-year-old victim was accosted by two men, one of them armed with a handgun, on Pulaski, but ran into the nearby store hoping to evade them
.But the gunman followed the man into the store and the two soon struggled over the weapon. During the struggle, the gun discharged, striking the gunman in the left leg.
He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit, because the bullet struck an artery.
"He may have bled out at the scene if paramedics hadn't taken him to the hospital," a police source said.
The victim was unharmed.
A bullet, or possibly a bullet fragment, struck the boy in the leg. The boy wasn't seriously injured and was treated at an area hospital and released.
The gunman's accomplice fled the scene.
The hospitalized man is a convicted felon with a pending weapons and narcotics case
