The man, 70, was returning from buying food to his apartment in the 1300 block of North Cleveland Avenue about 4:45 p.m. Friday when he was confronted by two men in their 20s, one of whom had a 9mm handgun.
The two robbers went through the man’s pockets and took cash and other items, then demanded the man let them into his apartment.
In the man’s home, the two robbers bound the man’s son, 17, to his wheelchair using duct tape, and ransacked the apartment, stealing a television and other electronic equipment, police said. The robbers then fled, stealing the family’s burgundy 2000 Ford full-size van.
Police were alerted to the home invasion and arrived at the apartment, where the teen had freed one arm and was able to allow officers in, police said. It was not clear whether the boy's father also was bound in the home invasion.
Police did not have a detailed description of the robbers, and were not yet releasing the license plate number of the van being sought.
