Man charged with shooting police officer Sunday

A 21-year-old South Side man was charged with shooting a Chicago police officer in the South Shore neighborhood on Sunday.
Cortez Ross, of the 4300 block of South Champlain Avenue, faces attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery charges.
Ross is expected in court Wednesday.
He’s accused of shooting a Calumet Area gang cop in the hand on the 6700 block of South East End Avenue about 4 p.m. following a foot chase.
The 35-year-old officer and two other officers responded to a call and saw three males run past their car, so two of the officers got out and chased him.
Police say Ross shot the officer with a gun he pulled from his waistband after the officer tackled him.
The officer, an 8-year veteran, suffered a "through-and-through" gunshot wound to his hand and was treated and released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
A second officer shot Ross wounding him three times.
