Earl Cowen, 55, of the 700 block of South Harvard Avenue, was charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon, police said. He also was wanted on a parole violation warrant.
He appeared in bond court today and was ordered held without bail, officials said. A warrant was lodged against him for a parole violation.
The girl told officers she was on an inbound train when she saw Cowen walk into the train car and heard him start screaming at the passengers, according to a police report.
He sat behind her and said, "Give me your money or I'll kill you," the report said.
She told him she had no money and opened her purse to show Cowen she only had $5 and begged him not to take it, the report said.
He then displayed a Swiss army knife and ordered her to remove her bottom garment. He stood behind her and assaulted her with his hand.
Police responded to a 911 call of a sexual assault that happened on a Blue Line train and shortly afterward, officers saw Cowen walking in the 400 block of South Halsted Street near a Blue Line stop. He matched the description of the suspect -- a man in his mid-50s wearing a red sweater and a black skullcap -- according to the report.
Officers stopped him and Cowen said, "Man, I just got out the train about to see my girl, why y'all messing with me?".
They took him to a nearby location where the victim was being treated by paramedics and she identified him. Cowen was arrested at 12:05 a.m.,
