Officials are using fingerprints to determine the identity of a man whose body was found in a freight train car encrusted in coal matter Sunday afternoon after its load was emptied at a South Side plant.
The body, which appeared to be of a white man, was found in a train hopper at about 4 p.m. in the KCBX train terminal on the 3200 block of East 100th Street. The body was pronounced dead at the plant at 5:40 p.m..
According to the train's manifest, the train was loaded with coal Aug. 16 in Big Horn County, Montana. Investigators suspect that the man may have been homeless and may have tried to stow a ride on the train. The body was found after it fell from the container as it was being emptied into a hopper car.
