Two people who heard a woman screaming for help as she was being attacked in the Palmer Square neighborhood ran to her aid and chased her assailant.
The attack took place at gunpoint about 10 p.m. Wednesday in the 2900 block of West Belden Avenue.
Police have issued a community alert asking for the public's help in finding the suspect, described as an Hispanic man between 17 and 20 years old, 5-foot-7, 185 pounds with a dark complexion, a fade haircut and "permanently shrugged shoulders with little or no neck visible. He was wearing a checkered or striped shirt, possibly white and orange or white and red, and tan cargo shorts.
Police said the man pushed the woman into a gangway and began to attack her as she screamed for help. Two people in the area heard her screams and ran to her assistance as one of them called 911, police said.
They then chased the man on foot. At one point he pointed his gun at his pursuers. He was last seen running north on Sacramento Avenue near Medill Avenue.
The assailant, wanted for aggravated criminal sexual assault, was also seen following another woman in the 2300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue shortly before the attack.
